2014 Jaguar XJR Positioned as New Flagship Performance Model

By Jeff Youngs, April 05, 2013
Calling the 2014 XJR "the most focused, agile, and responsive XJ ever made," Jaguar introduced its new flagship luxury performance sedan at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. "This car has been dynamically set-up from the outset to deliver stunning performance, while still retaining the luxury and comfort common to the entire XJ range. The XJR has all the breadth of capability you could wish for in a high-performance luxury saloon car," said Andrew Dobson, chief program engineer for the new XJR.

To reflect its status as the flagship model of the XJ line, the 2014 Jaguar XJR is equipped with a more powerful version of the supercharged, direct-injection, 5.0-liter V-8 engine offered in other XJ models. Producing 550 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 502 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,500 rpm and 5,500 rpm, and equipped with an automatic stop/start system to help conserve fuel when appropriate, the stronger engine accelerates the XJR to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, according to Jaguar, and to a top speed of 174 mph.

The 8-speed automatic transmission is tuned specifically for use in the XJR and shifts or holds gears based on how the vehicle is being driven, Jaguar says. Additional mechanical modifications to the new 2014 XJR include a recalibrated electronic active differential, retuned Dynamic Stability Control system offering greater ability to explore the vehicle's limits, upgraded steering that uses components from the F-Type sports car, and a performance braking system. Jaguar also modified the Adaptive Dynamics suspension based on development work conducted at Germany's Nurburgring and England's Rockingham race circuits.

Styling changes set the 2014 Jaguar XJR apart from other XJ models. The vehicle is equipped with a new front splitter, black mesh grille with a chrome surround, signature hood louvers, aerodynamic side sills, rear spoiler, and quad exhaust outlets. The new XJR rides on lightweight 20-inch forged aluminum wheels in a 5-spoke Farallon design with a choice between a Sparkle Silver and Technical Grey finish. Pirelli performance tires are sized 265/35 in front and 295/30 in back.

Jaguar dresses the XJR's cabin in Jet Black semi-aniline leather with a choice of alternate-color inserts, contrast-color stitching, and piano black or carbon fiber veneers. A suede headliner is standard, with leather offered as an option. The XJR also features a 380-watt, 12-speaker Meridian audio system. An 825-watt, 18-speaker Meridian Trifield surround-sound system is offered at extra cost.
