2014 Ford Transit Set to Replace Aged E-Series Van in U.S.

It has been more than two decades since the Ford E-Series Van and Wagon models were completely redesigned for the 1992 model year. These venerable workhorses will be replaced for 2014 by the new Transit, a large commercial van that Ford sells around the world.

The new 2014 Ford Transit continues an emerging trend toward global commercial vehicles, joining the existing Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and upcoming 2014 Ram ProMaster in the fight for commercial van buyers seeking maximum cargo volume and maximum fuel economy.

Unlike the current E-Series model, which is exclusively powered by a V-8 engine, the new 2014 Transit will offer a turbocharged, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine and a turbocharged, 3.2-liter clean diesel 5-cylinder engine. The latter power plant joins the Ford Power Stroke family of diesel engines, and "has established a proven record for reliability, durability and refinement," according to Ford. The 3.2-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel is used in the Ford Ranger pickup truck that is sold outside of the United States.

"Commercial van drivers spend most of their working hours behind the wheel," said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of Powertrain Engineering. "We know they want a fuel-efficient diesel engine with smooth, responsive performance and low operating costs."

Ford says the new 3.2-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel's power rating has not been certified for North America, but notes that the engine generates 197 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. of torque in European specification, with 90% of peak torque available between 1,700 rpm and 3,500 rpm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and Ford expects it to be B20 biodiesel-compatible.

Additional highlights of the new 3.2-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel engine include:

  • Quick-start glow plugs designed to provide fast engine starting at temperatures down to -10 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Sand-cast iron cylinder block and aluminum cylinder heads
  • Double overhead camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder
  • Common-rail piezoelectric fuel injectors
  • Selective catalytic reduction to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions
  • Integrated diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter

"We're confident our commercial van customers will be extremely pleased with the 3.2-liter's fuel economy, performance and running costs," said Bakaj. The new 2014 Transit will be built in Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant and goes on sale near the end of 2013.
