2014 Ford Transit Connect Van Provides Maximum Space at Minimum Cost

Until 2009, when Ford introduced the Transit Connect compact commercial van to the U.S. market, small business owners and corporations requiring an enclosed cargo hauler could choose between an inefficient full-size van or a minivan designed to first serve families, and then businesses. The Ford Transit Connect represented a "white space" solution to the need for an affordable compact van designed specifically for commercial use, and was named the 2010 North American Truck of the Year.

For 2014, a completely redesigned Ford Transit Connect debuts, offering a choice of two 4-cylinder engines, two wheelbase and body lengths, two rear cargo door designs, two trim levels, and several window configurations. Maximum cargo capacity is 130 cubic feet, maximum payload capacity is 1,650 pounds, and maximum trailer towing capacity is 2,000 pounds. Although EPA fuel-economy estimates are not finalized as this post is written, Ford claims the new 2014 Transit Connect will get 30 mpg on the highway with its optional EcoBoost engine.

"We have completely re-engineered Transit Connect with North American business owners top of mind," said Joe Hinrichs, Ford's president of The Americas. "This all-new cargo hauler offers entrepreneurs and fleet owners a unique combination of leading fuel efficiency, cargo capacity and maneuverability."

A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard in the new 2014 Ford Transit Connect, and is offered with a preparation package to convert it to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). A direct-injected and turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine is optional for the Transit Connect. Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that delivers the power to the front wheels. Final horsepower and torque figures for the engines will be available closer to the van's arrival in showrooms.

Buyers can choose between a regular-length and an extended-length Transit Connect. The regular-length van rides on a 104.8-inch wheelbase, is 173.9 inches long, and carries up to 100 cubic feet of cargo. The extended-length van has a 120.6-inch wheelbase, 189.7-inch length, and up to 130 cubic feet of cargo volume. A driver seat and front passenger seat are standard, with a 3-passenger second-row bench seat optional.

The 2014 Transit Connect is offered in XL or XLT trim. Standard equipment includes electric steering, 6 air bags, front-disc rear-drum anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, trailer sway control, and 16-inch steel wheels with plastic wheel covers. Ford's MyKey technology is also standard, allowing the Transit Connect's owner to program maximum vehicle speed, maximum stereo volume, incessant seat belt usage chimes, and other safety-related vehicle functions.

As this post is written, Ford has not defined what features are standard on the XL or the XLT, and which are optional. It has, however, confirmed that the following will be available for the 2014 Transit Connect:

  • 16-inch or 17-inch aluminum wheels
  • Electrically-heated windshield
  • Heated washer jets
  • Heated power-adjustable side mirrors
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Automatic headlights paired with wiper operation
  • Adaptive cornering fog lights
  • 6.5-inch in-dash display screen
  • Reversing camera
  • Navigation system
  • Sync smartphone pairing technology
  • MyFord Touch infotainment system
  • Ford Work Solutions CrewChief telematics system

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect is built in Valencia, Spain, and goes on sale in the United States in the fall of 2013.
