2014 Chevrolet SS Debuts at Daytona 500

By Jeff Youngs, February 19, 2013
For the first time since 1996, Chevrolet dealers are getting a rear-wheel-drive performance sedan equipped with a V-8 engine. The new 2014 Chevrolet SS debuted this past Saturday, February 16, at Daytona International Speedway--the same day it made its inaugural NASCAR appearance in the 2013 Daytona 500.

Equipped with the same 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 engine found in the 2013 Corvette, the new 2014 Chevy SS accelerates to 60 mph in less than five seconds, according to Chevrolet. The V-8 generates 415 horsepower at 5,900 rpm and 415 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm, and Chevrolet says premium fuel is recommended but not required. A 6-speed automatic transmission delivers the motive force to the vehicle's rear wheels. Drivers wishing to manually control gear changes can do so using TapShift paddle shifters on the Chevy SS model's steering wheel.

Under the 2014 Chevy SS model's 4-door sedan bodywork there is a 4-wheel independent suspension employing MacPherson struts in front and a 4-link arrangement in back. A set of staggered-width, forged and polished 19-inch aluminum wheels are standard and have what Chevrolet characterizes as "ultra-high-performance" tires sized 245/40 in front and 275/35 in back. The new SS also has 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes, 4-piston Brembo front calipers, and a sport-tuned electric steering system. Chevrolet says the new SS offers a "near 50/50 weight distribution."

Based on preliminary information, it appears the 2014 Chevrolet SS will be equipped with a long list of standard equipment. Highlights include leather seats with extra bolstering in front, premium sound system, color in-dash touch screen, color head-up display, and push-button starting. Safety features include a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, side blind-zone alert system, forward-collision warning system, and a lane-departure warning system.

Additional features offered for the new 2014 Chevy SS include a navigation system and Chevrolet MyLink smartphone pairing technology, which allows the driver to control smartphone calls, applications, and more using voice commands. There is also a standard touch screen and controls on the steering wheel. The SS will also be the first Chevrolet in history to offer Automatic Parking Assist technology, which can steer the car into a parallel or reverse right-angle parking space while the driver operates the transmission and pedals.

Built in Australia and based on the Holden VF Commodore, a model that also served as the basis for the 2008 and 2009 Pontiac G8, the Chevy SS goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2013. The automaker says 2014 Chevrolet SS prices will be announced closer to the vehicle's on-sale date.
