2014 BMW 6 Series Lineup Updated with New Models, New Technology

By Jeff Youngs, April 05, 2013
The 2014 BMW 6 Series lineup is expanding again, in the form of a new BMW M6 Gran Coupe, a new 640i Gran Coupe with xDrive, and a new limited-production version of the 650i Convertible. BMW is also upgrading its iDrive and Connected Drive technologies for the 2014 model year and making performance enhancements to the M6.

Regarding technology enhancements, BMW's iDrive infotainment system is upgraded to what the automaker is calling iDrive4.2. This next-generation system includes improved graphics, simplified voice commands, and the ability to more easily and quickly find information and execute directives, BMW says. The navigation system adds 3-D aerial and perspective view mapping and offers new options for entering a destination.

BMW also updates its ConnectedDrive technology, to which two smartphones can now be paired simultaneously. New multi-lingual speech recognition with a dictation function supports speech-to-text messaging, e-mail composition, and voice memo features. The 2014 6 Series can also be equipped with a new optional Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster that changes the vehicle's gauges and information displays to provide information pertinent to whatever BMW Driving Dynamics Control mode the driver has selected.

The new 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe, introduced late last year, goes on sale on June 5, 2013. Additionally, all models in the 2014 M6 lineup can be equipped with a traditional manual gearbox as an option at no additional charge. With the manual transmission, when the BMW Driving Dynamics Control system is placed in Efficient or Sport mode, the transmission automatically matches revs when the driver downshifts. In Sport+ mode, the driver is responsible for this task. The 2014 M6 models can also be optioned with new M Carbon Ceramic Brakes, which reduce weight by 42.6 pounds and improve braking response and performance. Models equipped with this option have gold-painted calipers.

BMW will also produce 100 units of the 2014 650i Convertible Frozen Brilliant White Edition. Buyers choose whether or not they want xDrive all-wheel drive, but otherwise these limited-production vehicles are equipped the same way, painted Frozen Brilliant White matte and equipped with Black Nappa leather seats and Gray Poplar interior wood. Exterior trim and the convertible top are black, and the Frozen Brilliant White Edition rides on Ferric Gray BMW M Performance 20-inch wheels. Standard equipment includes the Executive package and the M Sport package. Versions with xDrive also get a Cold Weather package.
