2014 BMW 4 Series Convertible Takes Familiar Approach to Top-Down Motoring

By Jeff Youngs, October 15, 2013
A BMW has officially debuted the new 2014 4 Series Convertible, which replaces the 3 Series Convertible in the automaker's lineup. BMW is in the process of rolling out a new product naming approach that reserves odd numbers for sedans, station wagons, and Gran Turismo models, while coupes and convertibles have even numbers. Thus, with this redesign, the former 3 Series Coupe and Convertible are now called the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible.

By way of that explanation, the 2014 4 Series Convertible is offered as the 428i and the 435i, the latter a more powerful version of the car. A 3-piece power-retractable hardtop roof is standard equipment, transforming the car for top-down motoring in just 20 seconds, according to BMW. The 4 Series Convertible's cargo space is more accessible, thanks to a new mechanism that moves the stowed roof out of the way in order to load or retrieve items such as luggage or golf clubs.

Longer, lower, and wider than the model it replaces, the 4 Series Convertible is offered with several new infotainment and safety features, as well as new fuel-saving technologies. Standard, Luxury Line, Sport Line, and M Sport Line trim levels are available, and 4 Series Convertible buyers can tailor each through a generous list of paint colors, interior colors and trims, and optional equipment.

Driving purists may bemoan the standard 8-speed Sport automatic transmission, but it does offer manual control of gear changes via a shift gate and paddle shifters. Normal and Sport driving modes are also included, and the 4 Series Convertible's Driving Experience Control system provides access to Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport + vehicle calibrations. BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system is available as an option for the 428i Convertible.
