2014 Bentley Continental GT Lineup Gains New S V8 Model

By Jeff Youngs, September 05, 2013
At the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, Bentley is debuting its new 2014 Continental GT S V8 models, which add power combined with steering and suspension upgrades designed to give the grand touring cars what the automaker characterizes as a "sharper, more sporting" driving character.

Equipped with a slightly more powerful version of the twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V-8 engine installed in the standard Continental GT V8, the new 2014 Continental GT S V8 Coupe and Convertible models are rated to produce 521 horsepower and 502 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter available starting at 1,700 rpm. The engine is equipped with variable-displacement technology, which is designed to operate the engine on 4 of its 8 cylinders under certain driving conditions in order to help conserve fuel. Bentley estimates that the new GT S V8 Coupe will get 18 mpg in combined driving, while the Convertible is expected to return 17 mpg.

An 8-speed automatic transmission delivers the power to all four wheels, distributed 40% to the front wheels and 60% to the rear wheels. Switch the car into "S" driving mode, and throttle response sharpens at the same time that the transmission holds gears longer, according to Bentley. Acceleration to 60 mph takes 4.3 seconds for the GT S V8 Coupe, Bentley says, and the car can achieve a top speed of 192 mph. The GT S V8 Convertible is not quite as quick, getting to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and topping out at 191 mph.

In addition to the extra power, the new Continental GT S V8 receives a reworked sport suspension that's been lowered by 10mm, matched with revised Continuous Damping Control that preserves ride quality while supplying gains in handling capability, the automaker claims. The GT S V8 models also have re-tuned steering and revised stability control programming.

Styling modifications include "Beluga" lower body styling, red-painted brake calipers, gloss black grille trim, and redesigned 20-inch open-spoke aluminum wheels. Buyers can opt for 21-inch wheels as well as dark-tinted headlights and taillights, and the S V8 variants are offered in 17 different shades of paint, including the exclusive Kingfisher Blue and a new Monaco Yellow paint color. Inside, the headliner is equipped with a contrast center stripe that matches the color of the leather used for the seats.

Bentley says that customers can expect deliveries of the new car to commence in early 2014.
