2014 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet Set to Debut in Detroit

2014 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet Set to Debut in Detroit

By Jeff Youngs, January 07, 2013
There is the Audi A5. There is the Audi S5, tuned for greater performance. And then there is the Audi RS 5, a high-performance luxury sport coupe equipped with a high-revving V-8 engine and numerous hardware upgrades. The new 2014 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet is the convertible version of that model, which will debut in the United States at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The new Audi RS 5 Cabriolet offers the same direct-injection, 4.2-liter V-8 engine as the RS 5 Coupe, tuned to deliver 450 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and 317 lb.-ft. of torque between 6,000 and 8,000 rpm. A 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch automated transmission delivers power to all four wheels through a Quattro all-wheel-drive system equipped with front and rear sports differentials and a crown-gear center differential. According to Audi, the RS 5 Cabriolet accelerates to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and offers a top speed of 174 mph--all without incurring a gas-guzzler tax.

Audi says that the 2014 RS 5 Cabriolet's convertible top opens in 15 seconds and closes in 17 seconds, performing either task while the vehicle travels at speeds up to 30 mph. Since the roof is soft fabric rather than a power-retractable hardtop, it folds into a small amount of space, leaving 11.3 cubic feet of trunk volume when the top is down. Top up, the RS 5 Cabriolet holds 13.42 cubic feet of luggage. Rear split-folding seats help expand capacity when there are only one or two passengers.

Because the RS 5 Cabriolet is a performance-oriented convertible, it requires structural reinforcements. To help offset the added weight, the RS 5 Cabriolet's front fenders are aluminum. This model is also equipped with LED headlights and taillights, redesigned rear bumper with a larger diffuser panel, honeycomb inserts enclosing elliptical exhaust outlets, and a matte carbon rear lip spoiler that adds downforce at speed. A set of 19-inch aluminum wheels is standard.

Inside, the RS 5 Cabriolet is equipped with power sport seats wrapped in leather with Alcantara inserts. Fine Nappa leather and ventilated front seats are optional, and both types of leather are specially pigmented to resist heating in the sunlight.

Audi says the new 2014 RS 5 Cabriolet goes on sale in the spring of 2013.
