2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Wins "SUV of the Year" Award

By Jeff Youngs, October 17, 2012
Motor Trend magazine has announced its 2013 "Sport/Utility of the Year" award, and the winner is the redesigned Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. The occasion marks the second time the GL-Class has won the award. When the first-generation GL debuted for 2007, it was the winner in the annual contest.

"We had an extremely competitive field for Motor Trend's 2013 Sport/Utility of the Year," said Edward Loh, Editor-in-Chief of Motor Trend. "Simply put, the Mercedes-Benz GL is an outstanding vehicle, and we're proud to name it our 2013 Sport/Utility of the Year." In the full article, scheduled for the magazine's December issue, Motor Trend called the new Mercedes GL "the best the luxury SUV class has ever seen."

"We're honored that the GL-Class has once again been awarded Motor Trend's Sport/Utility of the Year," said Steve Cannon, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. "Motor Trend's critical acclaim for the depth of its functionality, together with the broadest powertrain offering in any full-size SUV, shows our commitment to delivering on our promise to our customers of the best or nothing."

The redesigned 7-passenger Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is offered in GL350 BlueTec, GL450, GL550, and GL63 AMG models, each equipped with a unique powertrain and 4Matic 4-wheel drive. The GL350 BlueTec has a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 engine and is rated to get 22 mpg in combined driving. The GL450 and GL550 are equipped with turbocharged V-8 engines, the latter model supplying more horsepower and torque. The GL63 AMG is a performance-tuned version of the SUV, generating 557 horsepower and delivering acceleration to 60 mph in about 4.8 seconds.

Additionally, the new GL-Class offers a number of safety technologies, including Attention Assist, Collision Prevention Assist, Active Parking Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Curve, Adaptive Brake, and Crosswind Stabilization. A Surround View camera system gives the driver a 360-degree view of what's adjacent to the GL.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
