2013 Fiat 500c Abarth Cabrio Includes Free Driving School Instruction

At the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, Fiat introduced a number of new models that will soon be headed to dealerships. The 2014 Fiat 500L is the new family-size model, the 2013 Fiat 500e is the new electric version, and the 2013 Fiat 500c Abarth Cabrio is the new performance-tuned convertible variant. Essentially, the manufacturer applies the same cosmetic and hardware upgrades given to the standard 500 Abarth to the new 500c Abarth Cabrio.

The 500c Abarth Cabrio's nose is redesigned to make room for and to aid cooling of the new 1.4-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which generates 160 horsepower and a maximum of 170 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is the only gearbox offered, and it drives the front wheels through a Torque Transfer Control (TTC) system designed to eliminate torque steer.

Additional performance tuning takes the form of a sport suspension, faster steering calibration, sport exhaust system, and performance brakes with ventilated discs and red-painted calipers at each corner. A set of 16-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in all-season performance tires is standard, with upgraded 17-inch wheels and 3-season performance tires optional. The standard traction and stability control system offers three different modes, including one that shuts the system off completely.

Changes to the interior include racing seats with 5-point harness pass-throughs, flat-bottom sport steering wheel, 160-mph speedometer, turbo boost gauge, and upgraded cabin materials. The 500c Abarth Cabrio is well equipped in standard format, with a portable navigation system and a premium audio system among the few options.

The point of the 500c Abarth Cabrio, however, is related to its retractable top. This is not a convertible in the traditional sense, as the 500c retains its roof pillars and outer rails. In profile, it would be difficult to tell the 500c is a convertible. Rather, the center of the roof is removed from the windshield header to the trunk lid, and the power cloth replacement peels back to become a sunroof, a bigger sunroof with a glass rear window, or an open-air vehicle with the roof stacked atop the trunk.

The new 2014 Fiat 500c Abarth Cabrio goes on sale in the United States in the first quarter of 2013, and includes a free one-day Abarth Driving Experience performance driving school.
