Top-Rated Hatchbacks and Wagons in the 2015 Initial Quality Study

By Christian Wardlaw, June 18, 2015

The annual J.D. Power Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) serves as an automotive industry benchmark, measuring customer satisfaction with new vehicles after the first 90 days of ownership. Based on the data collected from more than 84,000 consumers, J.D. Power calculates Power Circle Ratings (PCRs) that summarize the study's findings and help consumers to make educated purchases. This guide to the highest-rated hatchbacks and wagons from the 2015 IQS is founded upon those PCRs. The models are listed in alphabetical order.

2015 Audi A7
Based on the Audi A6, the Audi A7 is a 5-door hatchback that is offered in A7, S7, and RS 7 model series. Minor equipment changes and new safety technologies help to identify the 2015 A7, which is available with Premium Plus and Prestige trim packages. Audi says the A7 holds 24.5 cu. ft. of cargo with the rear seats in use, but declines to provide a maximum volume figure.

2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
Though it is called a Gran Coupe, this version of the 4 Series is actually a 5-door hatchback. It debuted for 2015 and can carry nearly 46 cu. ft. of cargo with the rear seat folded down. Buyers choose between a turbocharged 4-cylinder or a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine and decide whether they would like rear-wheel or all-wheel drive (AWD). Luxury, Sport, and M Sport trim packages are also available.

In the 2015 IQS, the BMW 4 Series is the highest-ranked model in the Compact Premium Car segment.

2015 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo
BMW makes few changes to the 2015 5 Series Gran Turismo, a 5-door hatchback available with a choice between a turbocharged 6-cylinder or a turbocharged V-8 engine. Add the optional AWD system and fold the rear seats to create more than 63 cu. ft. of cargo room, and the 5 Series GT serves as a credible alternative to a traditional premium SUV.

In the 2015 IQS, the BMW 5 Series is the highest-ranked model in the Midsize Premium Car segment.

2015 Hyundai Accent
Equipped with up to 47.5 cu. ft. of maximum cargo space, the Accent hatchback provides utility in a small car package. Buyers choose between GS or Sport trim levels, the latter new for 2015. Hyundai has also updated the car's styling and interior, while the 137-horsepower, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine continues with either a manual gearbox or automatic transmission.

In the 2015 IQS, the Hyundai Accent is the highest-ranked model in the Small Car segment.

2015 Hyundai Elantra GT
A 5-door hatchback, the Elantra GT shares its name with the Elantra 4-door sedan but is based on a model called the Hyundai i30, which is sold in other global markets. Like other hatchback models, the Elantra GT's rear seat folds to enhance utility, and this Hyundai supplies up to 51 cu. ft. of cargo space. For 2015, Hyundai reduced the price of the optional Tech package.

2015 Kia Forte5
Offered in EX and SX trim levels, the latter with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine generating 201 horsepower, the Kia Forte5 holds 23.2 cu. ft. of cargo behind its rear seat. Kia does not provide a maximum cargo volume measurement for this model, and the only change for 2015 is that the Your Voice (UVO) eServices infotainment technology moves from the standard to the optional equipment list.

2015 Kia Soul
Redesigned for the 2014 model year, the Soul multi-purpose vehicle adds an electric version (Soul EV) with 93 miles of driving range for the 2015 model year. Kia also installs an upgraded version of its UVO eServices infotainment technology, and makes premium leather available with certain paint colors. Fold the Soul's rear seat and it holds more than 61 cu. ft. of cargo.

In the 2015 IQS, the Kia Soul is the highest-ranked model in the Compact MPV segment.

2015 Porsche Panamera
The Porsche Panamera is a 5-door hatchback, its rear liftgate opening wide to accept nearly 45 cu. ft. of cargo with the rear seats folded down. For 2015, Porsche offers the Panamera in a range of model series, and debuts a new rear-seat entertainment system, Panamera Edition version of the standard car with added standard equipment, and an Exclusive Series version of the Turbo S model.

In the 2015 IQS, the Porsche Panamera ranks third in the Large Premium Car segment.
