Top-Rated 2015 Luxury Sedans: Performance and Design
By Christian Wardlaw, July 26, 2015
To measure owner satisfaction with the performance and design of their new cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans, J.D. Power conducts the annual Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. Survey respondents tell J.D. Power what they like and dislike about their new vehicle after they have owned it for at least 90 days.
These collected owner opinions form the foundation for Power Circle Ratings, which summarize the APEAL Study's findings in consumer-friendly terms. Consumers who are planning to purchase a new vehicle, and would like to choose one that is appealing according to owners, can use these ratings as a guide during the research and shopping process.
Based on the results of the 2015 U.S. APEAL Study, the following luxury sedans are among the most appealing models within their respective segments. They are listed below in alphabetical order, and each receives a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 (out of a possible 5) for overall appeal.
2015 Audi A3
Audi redesigned the A3 for the 2015 model year, adding 4-door sedan and 2-door convertible body styles while putting the former 5-door hatchback model on hiatus. In addition to the two new body styles, buyers can select between three different engines, add all-wheel drive as an option, and choose from three different trim levels. A performance-tuned Audi S3 variant is also available.
2015 BMW 5 Series
When buying a BMW 5 Series, there are six different powertrains from which to choose, ranging from a turbocharged 4-cylinder to a turbocharged V-8. A hybrid model, a diesel model, and even a 5-door hatchback version called the Gran Turismo are also available, and you can still get a manual gearbox in this midsize luxury sports sedan.
2015 BMW 6 Series
BMW calls it a Gran Coupe, but don't let the name confuse you. This version of the 6 Series is actually a 4-door sedan. Three models are available: 640i, 650i, and M6. All-wheel drive is an option. A refreshed 2016 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe was on sale at the beginning of the summer of 2015.
2015 Infiniti Q70
In 2015, and for a nominal amount of money, Infiniti offers a stretched-wheelbase version of the Q70. This new Q70L model, plus additional standard equipment, and the continued availability of V-6, V-8, and hybrid engine choices with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, may contribute to the delight owners of the Infiniti Q70 expressed in the 2015 U.S. APEAL Study.
2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Redesigned for 2015 and equipped with more powerful and efficient engines, the C-Class Sedan has the latest Mercedes-Benz styling cues, safety features, and infotainment technologies. It is available in C300, C400 4Matic, and C63 AMG model series.
2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class
Serving as the entry point to the Mercedes-Benz car lineup, the CLA-Class is a 4-door sedan with front-wheel drive and a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. A performance-tuned version called the CLA45 AMG is equipped with 4Matic all-wheel drive and wrings 355 horsepower out of 2.0 liters of displacement and 4 cylinders.
2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Following a complete redesign for 2014, Mercedes-Benz expands the S-Class lineup for 2015, adding a new 2-door coupe and debuting a new plug-in hybrid version of the car. The performance-tuned AMG variants continue, and all 2015 S-Class models gain a new touchpad center control module.
