Top-Rated 2014 Coupes: Performance & Design

By Jeff Youngs, August 01, 2014

In addition to surveying vehicle owners to determine the quality and dependability of new cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans, J.D. Power also seeks to measure how gratifying the newest models are to own and drive. The annual Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study represents the industry standard in this regard.

The APEAL Study asks people who have owned their new vehicle for at least 90 days about what they like and don't like about their vehicles. From this research, Power Circle Ratings are calculated to visually summarize the findings, providing car shoppers with insight as to which makes and models are the most appealing from a performance and design standpoint, according to the people that own them.

Listed below, in alphabetical order, are those 2-door coupe models that receive a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 out of a possible 5 for overall appeal in the 2014 APEAL Study.

2014 Audi A5
Based on the Audi A4 sedan platform, the Audi A5 is offered in a variety of configurations. The least expensive A5 variant features a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and from there buyers can upgrade to the S5's supercharged 6-cylinder engine or the 450-horsepower V-8 installed in the RS5 model.

2014 BMW 4 Series
BMW has elected to name its 2-door coupes and convertibles using even-numbered series designations, and so the former 3 Series coupe is now the 4 Series coupe. It still shares its platform and powertrains with the 3 Series sedan but features greater differentiation in terms of bodywork and is positioned higher in the automaker's lineup. For 2014, the 4 Series is offered as the 428i and 435i.

2014 BMW 6 Series
Currently, the BMW 6 Series is the most luxurious sports coupe offered by BMW. Buyers choose the 640i with a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, 650i with a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, or the high-performance M6 Coupe.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette
Chevrolet redesigned the Corvette for the 2014 model year, introducing the seventh-generation version of what is commonly referred to as America's sports car. This year's model is called the Corvette Stingray, equipped with up to 460 horsepower from a new direct-injection, 6.2-liter V-8 engine. Chevrolet claims it takes 3.8 seconds for the Corvette Stingray to accelerate to 60 mph.

2014 Dodge Challenger
One of three retro-themed muscle cars that compete directly against one another--the others being the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang--the Dodge Challenger is the most appealing car in its segment, according to the people that own them. For 2014, Dodge introduced numerous special- and limited-edition versions of the Challenger, which shares a platform and powertrains with the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger.

2014 Kia Forte Koup
Kia redesigned the compact Forte Koup for 2014, and this affordable sports coupe is one of only a few models available at the lower end of the segment. Buyers have a choice of a 173-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or a turbocharged, 201-horsepower 4-cylinder engine, and may equip the car with numerous comfort, convenience, and technology upgrades.

2014 Porsche 911
Porsche's classic rear-engine sports car gained new Targa and GT3 variants in 2014, bringing to 10 the total number of 911 coupes available. They range in power from 350 to 560 horsepower, and in price from just over $90,000 to just over twice that, before adding options.

2014 Porsche Cayman
Take one Porsche Boxster convertible, install a fixed roof, tweak the engines to produce a little more power, and you've got the 2014 Porsche Cayman. This 2-seat, mid-engine sports car is available in regular- and extra-strength variants, and prices start at just over $52,500.

2014 Volkswagen Beetle
Technically, the Beetle is a 2-door hatchback, but it competes directly against models such as the Kia Forte Koup. Seating 4 people and offering a good-size trunk, the Beetle is available with a choice of three turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, including a diesel rated to get up to 41 mpg on the highway.
