Safest Luxury Sedans for 2012

For this guide to the safest luxury sedans for 2012, we include premium or "entry-luxury" brands in addition to traditional luxury marques. Compact, midsize and full-size models are represented below, listed in alphabetical order. All have received a 5-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).


BMW 3 Series
A compact luxury sport sedan with 5-passenger seating, the BMW 3 Series Sedan is redesigned for 2012. Standard safety features include rain-sensing wipers, 8 air bags, traction and stability control system, and 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with adaptive brake lights, Dynamic Brake Control, Cornering Brake Control, Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Stand-by, Brake Drying, and Start Off Assistant. Optional features include BMW Assist telematics service with Automatic Collision Notification, xenon headlights with adaptive light control, automatic high-beam control, reversing camera, park-assist sensors, forward-collision warning system, lane-departure warning system, active cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring system, and a side and top view camera system.


BMW 5 Series
The 2012 BMW 5 Series is a midsize luxury sport sedan with 5-passenger seating. In addition to the standard and optional safety features offered on the 3 Series Sedan (see above), the 5 Series is equipped with standard xenon headlights with adaptive light control and BMW Assist with Automatic Collision Notification, and is offered with a Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection system.




Buick LaCrosse
The 2012 Buick LaCrosse is a full-size, 5-passenger premium sedan equipped with 6 air bags, traction control, stability control, and 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist. An OnStar telematics system includes Advanced Crash Response service, which activates after an air bag deployment and notifies authorities that help is needed, and where the vehicle is located. Safety-related options for the Buick LaCrosse include rear side-impact air bags, reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, and a blind-spot monitoring system.


Buick Regal
The 2012 Buick Regal is a premium midsize sedan with room for 5 passengers. It is equipped with 8 air bags, traction and stability control system, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, and an OnStar telematics system offering 6 free months of Advanced Crash Response service. Park-assist sensors are optional.







Cadillac CTS
The 2012 Cadillac CTS is a midsize luxury sedan equipped with 6 air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, and a traction and stability control system. One free year of OnStar telematics with Advanced Crash Response is standard. Safety options include rain-sensing wipers, reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, and an Adaptive Forward Lighting System.





Chrysler 300
The 2012 Chrysler 300 is a premium full-size sedan with seating for 5 passengers. Standard safety equipment includes 7 air bags, traction control and stability control system, hill-start assist, and 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, ready-alert brake support and rain brake support. Options include rain-sensing wipers, reversing camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control system, forward-collision warning system, blind-spot monitoring system, and a rear cross-path detection system.

Volvo S60
The 2012 Volvo S60 is a compact luxury sedan with 5-passenger seating. Standard safety features include 6 air bags, traction and stability control system, and 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, ready-alert braking, and adaptive brake lights. The S60 is also equipped with a standard City Safety system, designed to automatically stop the car at low speeds if a collision is about to occur with another vehicle or a pedestrian. Safety-related options for the Volvo include active bi-xenon headlights, active high-beam assist, adaptive cruise control with Queue Assist and Distance Alert technologies, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection technology, Driver Alert Control, lane-departure warning system, and a road sign information system.
