Safest Cars Under $25,000

Each of the 2012 models listed below (in alphabetical order) meet all three of the following criteria: can be purchased for less than $25,000; is rated a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety; and received  a 5-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA.

2012 Chevrolet Cruze: Chevy's compact sedan has 10 standard air bags, 6 free months of OnStar Automatic Crash Response service including Injury Severity Prediction capability, and available rear park-assist sensors.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic: The subcompact Sonic includes 10 air bags, stability control, ABS with brake assist, and OnStar with Automatic Crash Response service.

2012 Honda Accord Sedan: Honda employs Advanced Compatibility Engineering for the Accord's body structure to make it more compatible with a variety of vehicles in a collision. A reversing camera is available with the navigation system.

2012 Honda Civic Sedan (all except GX model): Honda says Advanced Compatibility Engineering makes the compact Civic safer in crashes with a greater variety of vehicles. Six air bags, stability control, and ABS with brake assist are standard.

2012 Hyundai Elantra: Every Elantra includes 6 air bags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist. A reversing camera is available.

2012 Hyundai Sonata: The mid Sonata features Blue Link telematics with automatic collision notification service, which is free for a limited time. A reversing camera is available.

2012 Kia Optima: A reversing camera is optional on the mid Optima. Hybrid models emit a pre-recorded engine sound when operating in EV mode to alert pedestrians that a vehicle is approaching.

2012 Scion tC: Every Scion tC coupe has 8 air bags, stability control, ABS with brake assist, and a Smart Stop system designed to prevent the car from accelerating while the brake pedal is depressed.

2012 Toyota Camry: Smart Stop brake-override technology and 8 air bags are standard, while a reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring system, and Safety Connect emergency response service are optional on Toyota's family sedan.

2012 Toyota Prius: A Smart Stop feature and 7 air bags are standard on this mid hybrid, while a reversing camera, Safety Connect emergency response service, lane-departure warning, and a pre-collision system are optional.

2012 Volkswagen Passat: Aside from 6 air bags, stability control, and ABS with brake assist, the Passat is unavailable with additional safety technology.
