Safest 2013 Cars: Small Sedans

By Jeff Youngs, June 17, 2013
According to crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the models listed below, in alphabetical order, are the safest small sedans of 2013. For each model, specific standard or optional safety features are highlighted.

2013 Acura ILX
Aside from a single-angle reversing camera, the Acura ILX is equipped with basic safety equipment and nothing more. The optional Premium package adds a multi-angle reversing camera and SMS text messaging service.

2013 Buick Verano
Every Buick Verano is equipped with 10 air bags, a reversing camera, and 6 free months of OnStar service including Automatic Crash Response, which activates with air bag deployment to help speed rescuers to the scene of the accident. OnStar also provides a new FamilyLink vehicle location sharing and alert service. All Veranos except the base model get rear park-assist sensors, a rear cross-traffic alert system, and a side blind-zone alert system.

2013 Chevrolet Cruze
The least expensive version of the Chevy Cruze is equipped with 10 air bags and an OnStar telematics system with 6 free months of service. That includes Automatic Crash Response, which puts a live operator in touch with the car's occupants following an air bag deployment, and a FamilyLink vehicle location sharing and alert function. Options for the Cruze include a reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, and a side blind-zone alert system.

2013 Chevrolet Sonic

Next on our list of safest 2013 small sedans is the Chevrolet Sonic. The Chevy Sonic is equipped with 10 standard air bags, side blind-spot mirrors, and OnStar telematics with Automatic Crash Response, which puts an emergency operator in direct contact with the car's occupants if the air bags deploy, and FamilyLink services, which provides opt-in vehicle location sharing.

2013 Dodge Dart
Every 2013 Dart is equipped with 10 air bags, and in addition to its traction and stability control system, this car is equipped with a trailer sway control system. The braking system includes brake assist, ready-alert braking, and rain brake support. Buyers can opt for rain-sensing wipers, rear park-assist sensors, reversing camera, rear cross-path detection system, blind-spot monitoring system, and auto-dimming SmartBeam headlights.

2013 Ford Focus
Ford provides Focus buyers with available MyKey technology, which allows the car's owner to set speed limits, stereo volume limits, seat belt usage alerts, and to eliminate the option of turning off the stability control system. The optional Sync hands-free connectivity system is equipped with 911 Assist, which helps speed rescuers to the car's location following an air bag deployment. Rain-sensing wipers, front and rear park-assist sensors, and a reversing camera are also available for the 2013 Focus.

2013 Honda Civic
The only compact car to receive a "Top Safety Pick Plus" rating from the IIHS, thanks to its favorable performance in the new small overlap frontal-impact test, the 2013 Civic gets a strengthened body structure compared to last year, as well as Smart Vent side-impact air bags and SMS text messaging capability. A multi-angle reversing camera is optional.

2013 Hyundai Elantra
In addition to its standard package of safety features, the 2013 Elantra is available with a reversing camera. Hyundai's Blue Link telematics system, which offers Automatic Collision Notification service, SOS Emergency Assistance service, and the ability to program speed, curfew, and geo-fenced boundary alert notifications, is offered only on the Elantra GT hatchback model.

2013 Subaru Impreza
The Impreza includes a standard knee air bag for the driver, and is equipped with a Brake Override system that is designed to make it impossible to accelerate if the brake pedal is pressed. A reversing camera and text-messaging capability are options, and the Impreza is offered with an unusual safety feature: a windshield wiper de-icer, which helps ensure better visibility in cold, snowy weather.
