New for 2016: Volvo

Swedish car brand Volvo, owned by China’s Geely Group since 2010, continues renewing its lineup of cars, wagons, and SUVs in 2016 with two new models. The flagship 2017 S90 midsize premium sedan will replace the S80 and debuts this year. The new 2016 XC90 midsize premium SUV already is in showrooms. Both share Volvo’s new scalable product architecture (SPA) and advanced driving and safety technologies.

Enhancements for other 2016 Volvo models include design updates for the S60 and XC60. Additionally, Volvo is focusing on its new family of fuel-efficient Drive-E turbocharged engines and has made connectivity standard. Navigation is standard for all Premier and higher trim levels. Seven new wheel treatments are available for many models.

Volvo is on an upswing, and has broken ground on a new factory in Charleston, SC, that will begin building vehicles in 2018.

Following is an overview of new or updated features for each 2016 Volvo model:

  • Inscription extended-wheelbase model offers elegant appointments such as a walnut inlay and matte-finish trim, an extra 2.9 inches of legroom, power rear and side window shades, 18-in. alloy wheels, and two trim levels: Premier and Platinum
  • All trim levels available with turbocharged, 2.0- or 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 250 horsepower and mated with 6-speed automatic transmission, or 5- and 6-cylinder engine choices
  • Standard safety features including city low-speed collision-avoidance and many advanced safety systems are optional
  • Nine trim levels in front-wheel drive (FWD) and AWD, including the T6 Polestar performance edition
  • Platinum trim level is only offered in Osmium Gray metallic paint
  • Seven new wheel designs available
  • Fold-flat front passenger seat is discontinued
  • Cross Country All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant rides on raised suspension with 7.9 inches of ground clearance and unique honeycomb grille in dark gray with black fender extensions

  • Standard 18-in. wheels and heated front seats
  • S80 T5 midsize premium sedan now includes standard sunroof
  • T6 6-cylinder engine option and AWD model discontinued




2016 Volvo V60 R-Design photo2016 Volvo V60

  • New off-road Cross Country variant available for 5-seat wagon that was introduced in the United States in 2015
  • Five turbocharged engine choices including 4-, 5-, and 6-cylinder powertrains mated with 6- or 8-speed automatic transmission
  • Limited-edition Polestar performance model available with stiffer springs and chassis; paddle shifters; special brakes, wheels, and tires
  • Base AWD model dropped
  • To be replaced with new model on new architecture with shorter wheelbase in 2018
  • New Cross Country (AWD standard) and Inscription variants

  • No major changes to Volvo’s smallest premium SUV, its best-seller in the United States
  • Expected to be replaced in 2017 or early 2018
  • Fold-down front seat feature is discontinued

  • Compact premium SUV to be replaced by a V90 Cross Country in 2017
  • Standard 18-in. wheels and heated front seats
  • Features the T5 AWD 5-cylinder turbocharged engine
  • T6 turbocharged 6-cylinder engine has been dropped

  • New midsize premium SUV that seats 5 or 7 is built on all-new platform with Thor Hammer lights and prominent concave grille
  • Powered by supercharged and turbocharged Drive-E 4-cylinder T6 engine that produces 316 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque
  • Three trim levels are offered, including R-Design and Inscription
  • Equipped with a suite of IntelliSafe advanced driving safety technologies that includes 12.3-in. digital display
  • Leather steering wheel and aluminum accents inside
  • Choice of 18.5-in. and 19-in. alloy wheels
