New for 2015: Volvo

New for 2015: Volvo

By Jeff Youngs, March 13, 2015

2015 Volvo Overview

Volvo currently offers six different models for the 2015 model year, including two wagons that are brand-new to the U.S. market, as well as the all-new 2016 XC90 SUV, which introduces an all-new design for the brand as well as many new technologies. For 2015, Volvo is introducing American drivers to the V60, a midsize wagon, and the V60 Cross Country, a variant that sits higher than the V60 and behaves more like a crossover SUV.

Returning models have been updated with new mechanical features, including new engines and transmissions (only for front-wheel-drive models), engine start/stop technology, and enhanced safety and communications features. Many of these changes will happen midway through the model year, so they'll show up only on vehicles made in the latter half of 2015. The XC60 luxury crossover, for example, is slated to receive a new 5-cylinder turbocharged engine midway through the year, and Volvo says it will add pep and pop to the vehicle's performance.

2015 Volvo S60
Volvo's smallest and most affordable sedan, the S60 gets two new engines for 2015, coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Buyers have the choice of front-wheel-drive (FWD) base T5, T5 Premier, T5 Premier Plus, and T5 Platinum trim levels. All-wheel-drive (AWD) S60 T6 models are available in base, Premier Plus, Platinum, R-Design, and R-Design Platinum configurations. The new base engine--a 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter, 240-horsepower turbocharged power plant that produces 258 lb.-ft. of torque--is found on T5s with FWD, while the T6 models with FWD get a turbocharged, 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder that makes 302 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. The AWD models continue to use a 2.5-liter, turbocharged inline 5-cylinder (250 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque), mated with a 6-speed automatic, while the T6 R-Design gets a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline 6-cylinder that generates 325 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque.

What's New:
  • Two new 4-cylinder engines
  • 8-speed automatic transmission
  • Automatic engine start/stop saves fuel
  • Lane Assist is an available option
  • Cars built in latter part of the year get upgraded communications equipment

2015 Volvo S80
Like the smaller S60, the 2015 Volvo S80 sedan gets new engines for its lower trim levels. The FWD T5 models now employ a 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 240 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine replaces the old 6-cylinder engine, which was only slightly more powerful but considerably less fuel-efficient. The T6 variants will continue to employ a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine that cranks out 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque.

The 2015 Volvo S80 is available in black or white, or in several premium colors. The base model features 17-in. alloy wheels. The 2015 Volvo S80 is offered in T5 Drive-E and T5 Drive-E Platinum trim levels, both of which feature FWD, and the T6 AWD or the T6 AWD Platinum. Even the base models are lavishly equipped, with luxury touches such as leather upholstery and walnut inlays, and a 3-spoke leather-covered steering wheel.

What's New:
  • More fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine for FWD models
  • Upgraded option packages
  • Rearranged trim levels
  • Platinum trim level is fully loaded and offers few options

2015 Volvo V60
This midsize wagon is being introduced to American drivers for the first time this year. The 2015 Volvo V60 is similar to the Volvo S60 sedan, but with much greater cargo capacity--43.8 cu. ft. with the rear seatbacks folded down. Volvo showcases its new "Drive-E" engines in the FWD T5 model--a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that generates 240 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.

This 5-passenger wagon is available in three trim levels: T5 Drive-E, T5 AWD, and T6 AWD R-Design. Various option packages are available. The Premier package includes leather upholstery, roof rails, keyless ignition and entry, and more; the Premier Plus adds power-folding mirrors, rearview camera, and fold-flat front passenger seat, among other enhancements; the Platinum package adds a navigation system, 12-speaker surround-sound audio system, and more. The T6 AWD R-Design includes a sport-tuned suspension, adaptive xenon headlights, and a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine that makes 325 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque.

What's New:
  • All-new model for U.S. markets in 2015

2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country
The all-new 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country is similar to the V60 wagon, but it adds 7.4 in. of ground clearance and underbody skid plates, making it a more versatile vehicle with a noticeably higher stance and ride height. It has a slightly more aggressive exterior design than the standard V60. It features the same amount of cargo space--43.8 sq. ft. with the rear seats folded. Even the base model is loaded with luxury. Standard features include 18-in. alloy wheels, roof rails, automatic headlights, power sunroof, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and much more. Many options are available, either packaged or individually.

The 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country features AWD. Its standard engine is a 250-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-liter 5-cylinder that cranks up to 266 lb.-ft. of torque.

What's New:
  • All-new model for 2015

2015 Volvo XC60
The smallest of Volvo's three crossover SUV models, the 2015 XC60 gets new engines across the lineup. The T5 FWD features a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, while the T6 Drive-E's engine is a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. The former is a 240-horsepower model that makes 258 lb.-ft. of torque, while the latter cranks up to 302 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. The T5 AWD versions of the 2015 Volvo XC60 started the year with a 3.2-liter inline-6 engine that produces 240 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque, but this will be replaced for the latter part of the year with a turbocharged, 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine that produces 250 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2015 Volvo XC60 T6 AWD is equipped with a 300-horsepower, turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that makes 325 lb.-ft. of torque, and the top-of-the-line R-Design features an upgraded version of that engine that makes 325 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. Standard equipment includes 18-in. alloy wheels and an exceptionally broad palette of exterior colors (most of them available at a surcharge). All trim levels offer a well-equipped interior.

Many options are available, many of them as packages, and many of those packages are standard on the upper trim levels. These include high-tech features like electric-folding rear headrests and an elaborate adaptive cruise control system that adds auto-braking for possible collisions.

What's New:
  • New engines for FWD models
  • New engines phased in for AWD models
  • Upgraded 8-speed automatic transmission is standard
  • Rearranged trim levels
  • Additional and enhanced safety features

2015 Volvo XC70
The Volvo XC70 wagon got a cosmetic update for 2014, as well as some new paint colors. The 2015 model features updated and upgraded drivetrains. The FWD T5 Drive-E trim levels now feature a 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 240 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, coupled with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. The XC70 3.2 (AWD) features a 3.2-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine that makes 240 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque, and a 6-speed automatic. The T6 (also with AWD) features a turbocharged, 300-horsepower 3.0-liter inline-6 that generates 295 lb.-ft. of torque, with a 6-speed automatic.

Trim levels for these configurations include base, Premier, Premier Plus, and Platinum. Even the lower trim levels offer various luxury features as standard equipment. Many option packages are available, including two climate packages, technology, convenience, and proximity packages, twin child booster seats, and more.

What's New:
  • New 4-cylinder engines for FWD models
  • New 8-speed automatic transmission
  • Slight reshuffling of standard equipment at various trim levels
  • Volvo On Call and Sensus Connect telematics systems will be added mid-year as standard features

2016 Volvo XC90
Volvo is using the 2016 XC90, a 5- or 7-seat crossover SUV, to showcase its latest technological advances and design ideas. The exterior redesign includes a new prominent chrome-trimmed grille and T-shaped LED daytime running lights, both of which may become Volvo trademarks. The interior features a sophisticated touch screen and generous use of wood and leather. Options are gathered into several packages, and a long menu of individual options is offered as well.

Initially, the 2016 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD is available to U.S. consumers with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine--both supercharged and turbocharged--paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an AWD system. This powertrain produces 316 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Later in the year, the 2016 XC90 T8 AWD will be rolled out, equipped with what Volvo calls a "twin-engine" plug-in hybrid powertrain. It essentially uses the T6 AWD gasoline engine, adds an electric motor, and features a rechargeable battery to provide up to 25 miles of electric vehicle range. Total output equates to 400 horsepower and 472 lb.-ft. of torque.

What's New:
  • Aggressively reworked exterior displays new Volvo design cues
  • Standard turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder engine
  • Available plug-in hybrid model with 7-passenger seating
