New for 2011-Volvo

New for 2011-Volvo

By Jeff Youngs, December 31, 2010
2010 Volvo C70History
Volvo, a Swedish automaker, is currently a division of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, which is based in China. Volvo made its first car in 1927 with a production volume of 280 units. Swedish domestic sales increased rapidly thereafter, and the company was soon making cars, buses and trucks. Outboard and aircraft engines would soon follow. It wasn't until after World War II that Volvo became known outside its domestic market.

Over the following decades, the automaker became famous for its safety advancements. Volvo introduced laminated safety glass in 1944, and is credited with the invention of the 3-point safety belt shortly thereafter (it became standard in all of its models as of 1959). The company also developed padded dashboards and rear-facing child seats. The automaker also claims that it was the first to offer side air bags and head-protecting air bags. Volvo Cars, the automotive division, was sold to Ford Motor Company in 1999. It was then acquired by Geely Holding Group in 2010.

Today, Volvo manufactures a full range of passenger automobiles. They include compact hatchbacks, 4-door sedans, station wagons, and sport utility vehicles with up to 7-passenger seating capacities. All models are fitted with standard front-wheel drive, but many also offer the option of all-wheel drive. Volvo vehicles are manufactured and sold worldwide.

With that in mind, all variants of the C30 are powered by a turbocharged 5-cylinder engine driving the front wheels (other worldwide markets are also offered smaller gasoline and diesel powerplants). 2011 Volvo S602011 Volvo S60
The first-generation Volvo S60 debuted in 2001 to replace the outgoing S70. Always offered as a 4-door sedan, the S60 was gradually updated over the years. In 2007, it received a minor facelift, including a new grille, front bumper, outside mirrors, and a redesigned front spoiler for better aerodynamics. The S60's sporty driving character was also enhanced at that time with firmer front and rear shock absorbers and springs.

The 2011 Volvo S60 is an all-new second-generation model. The 4-door shares platforms with the Volvo XC60, but its sleek appearance mirrors the look of the Volvo S60 Concept. Volvo has packed even more technology-and safety features-into its latest new model. Even so, although the new S60 grows in nearly every dimension, the curb weight has increased by less than 100 pounds, Volvo says. The interior of the 5-passenger sedan retains the familiar Volvo appearance, with a focus on simplicity, according to the automaker. Even though the roofline has been slimmed, the rear split-folding seats offer more knee space than in the outgoing model, and the trunk opening is wider to accommodate larger loads.

2010 Volvo S802011 Volvo S80
The Volvo S80 was first introduced in 1997 as a replacement for the Volvo 960. In sharp contrast to that 5-passenger, rear-wheel-drive sedan, the first-generation S80 was designed on a front-wheel-drive platform and later equipped with all-wheel drive. At its introduction, the Volvo S80 was unique in that it offered a transversely mounted inline-6 powerplant. It was an uncommon engine arrangement, but a necessary contributor to the high safety ratings the S80 earned.

Now in its second generation (last redesigned for the 2007 model year), the S80 is offered with a choice between two 6-cylinder engines. The sedan enters the 2011 model year with a minor bump in horsepower for both powerplants and a longer list of features. The standard S80 AWD model has been dropped for 2011.

The Volvo V50 is a midsize station wagon that was first introduced for the 2005 model year. It remains the only traditional station wagon in the lineup now that Volvo has discontinued its big brother, the V70, for the 2011 model year.

The V50 traces its history back to the V40, introduced nearly a decade ago. That early wagon was based on the sedan version of the Volvo S40. Likewise, with a different designation, the 2008 V50 was based on the current S40 model sedan. Chassis, engines and drivelines are all shared with the S40. Volvo's V50 sportswagen was given a comprehensive update including new exterior and interior styling, enhanced storage and versatility, and additional safety features in 2008. For 2011, Volvo has discontinued the base (non-turbo) model and eliminated the all-wheel-drive variant. There is no longer a manual transmission option, but the standard equipment list has grown.

As expected, the two also share powertrains with a choice of normally aspirated or turbocharged 6-cylinder engines and front- or all-wheel drive. The interior of the XC60 was designed to be both modern and functional. The dashboard features Volvo's "floating stack" lending an open feel to the cockpit, while the rear seats fold down to improve cargo capacity. Introduced in 1998, the Volvo XC70 is a crossover model of the now-discontinued V70 station wagon. The first-generation model was based on the Volvo 850 (predecessor to the V70). Differentiating it from the station wagon, the XC (or "cross country") models featured raised ride height, body cladding, and all-wheel-drive powertrains. The second-generation model arrived in 2000. Unlike its boxy predecessor, the new model was more modern and aerodynamic in appearance. It was also larger.

The current model, now a third-generation variant, was introduced for the 2008 model year. It was sold alongside the V70 station wagon until the end of 2010. With the absence of the V70, Volvo has added a standard front-wheel-drive XC70 to the lineup for 2011. Unlike the competition, the midsized XC90 offered up-to-7-passenger seating and a long list of standard safety features, including an ultra-high-strength Boron steel-reinforced passenger compartment.

At its introduction, the XC90 was available with a choice of turbocharged 5- or 6-cylinder powerplants. Those were eventually replaced with a normally aspirated 6-cylinder (3.2 models) and a Yamaha-sourced 8-cylinder (V8 models). The XC90 received a minor facelift in 2007 when the front and rear fascias were restyled and the interior appointments upgraded. With an all-new XC90 expected to debut shortly, Volvo made few changes to its flagship SUV for the 2011 model year.
