The Porsche Boxster Concept debuted in 1993 at the Detroit Auto Show as a tribute to the 1950s-era Porsche 550 Spyder. The 2-seat concept was considered a show-stopper and was rushed into production to debut for the 1997 model year as the Porsche Boxster. The lightweight sports car featured a 6-cylinder engine mid-mounted in the chassis and a lightweight, power-operated soft top-and a curb weight of less than 3,000 pounds. Significantly revised in 2005, and then again in 2009, the engine has grown from 2.5 liters to 3.4 liters in the top model. New for 2011 is the "Boxster Spyder" variant-a lightened and bare-bones high-performance model targeted at enthusiasts.

After decades of building only sports cars, Porsche launched its first-ever sport utility vehicle in 2003. Called the Cayenne, the 5-passenger SUV was developed alongside Volkswagen and shared many common components with VW SUV models, including the chassis. It was offered with standard all-wheel drive (designed for both on- and off-road use) and 6- or 8-cylinder engine choices.

The "second-generation" Cayenne arrived in 2007. While it wasn't an all-new design, the heavily reworked model carried significant upgrades, including a revised body design and upgraded engines. Porsche's highest-selling model (outselling even the 911 Carrera) has been completely redesigned for 2011. It arrives 400 pounds lighter than its predecessor (translating to better performance and fuel economy), and is available with a hybrid powerplant-Porsche's first.

Critical Facts:
  • Four models: Cayenne, Cayenne S, Cayenne S Hybrid and Cayenne Turbo
  • New standard 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower (Cayenne)
  • Upgraded standard 4.8-liter 8-cylinder rated at 400 horsepower (Cayenne S)

  • New standard supercharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder rated at 333 horsepower with a 47-horsepower electric assist motor for total system power of 380 horsepower (Cayenne S Hybrid)
  • New standard 8-speed "Tiptronic S" automatic transmission
  • Standard all-wheel-drive powertrain
  • Lighter all-wheel-drive system helps lower overall weight by 400 pounds
  • 5-passenger seating capacity

Launched in 2006 as a follow-up to the Porsche Boxster, the Porsche Cayman is a closed-roof 2-door coupe that shares most of the same mechanicals as its open-roof sibling. Like the Boxster and Boxster S, the Cayman (and higher performing Cayman S) features a mid-mounted 6-cylinder engine. Porsche says the Cayman is twice as rigid as the Boxster, making it even more desirable as a sports car. The Cayman has a rear hatchback and storage in front-although a lack of second-row seats limits its passenger capacity. The 2011 Cayman is a carryover from 2010.

Critical Facts:
  • Two models: Cayman and Cayman S
  • Standard 2.9-liter flat-6 engine rated at 265 horsepower (Cayman)
  • Optional 3.4-liter flat-6 rated at 320 horsepower (Cayman S)
  • 6-speed manual or 7-speed "PDK" dual-clutch transmission

Unlike the rear- or mid-engine 2-door models, the Panamera has a conventional, front-engine design but also offers 4-passenger seating. Available in rear- or all-wheel drive, the sedan features a rear hatchback and folding second-row seats to improve luggage capacity and utility. Originally launched in only normally aspirated or turbocharged 8-cylinder models, Porsche is introducing a new V-6 option for 2011.
