5 Fast Facts About the 2014 Ford Mustang

By Jeff Youngs, May 09, 2013
A redesigned 2015 Ford Mustang is on the way, making the 2014 model the last of the retro-generation of Mustangs. Not unexpectedly, Ford makes few modifications to the 2014 Mustang lineup. The Boss 302 is gone, but otherwise the changes are limited to a new 17-inch wheel design for the Mustang V6 Premium models, standard heated front seats for the Shelby GT500 models, and a new Appearance package option for the V6 and GT models. If you're thinking about taking home a current Mustang while you can, here are 5 fast facts about this iconic American pony car.

1) If nothing else, the 2014 Ford Mustang offers choice. Buyers can select a coupe, coupe with a glass roof option, or a convertible. Three levels of performance are available, too, with a 305-horsepower V-6 (Mustang V6), 420-horsepower V-8 (Mustang GT), and a supercharged 662-horsepower V-8 (Shelby GT500). Fuel-economy ratings range between 15 mpg and 31 mpg, depending on engine and transmission choice.

2) The Mustang V6 and Mustang GT are offered in standard or Premium trim levels. Premium trim includes leather seats, aluminum dashboard accents, ambient interior lighting, a better stereo, and upgraded technology. Larger wheels are also included for Premium models, and the Mustang GT gets a standard Track package.

3) The Mustang Shelby GT500 is equipped with what Ford claims is the most powerful production V-8 engine in the world. Top speed exceeds 200 mph, according to Ford, and the Shelby GT500 is fortified with styling adjustments to increase downforce as well as drivetrain, suspension, steering, and braking modifications.

4) Ford equips the 2014 Mustang with a standard MyKey system. MyKey allows the car's owner to program several safety-related vehicle settings, including incessant seat belt warnings, a limited vehicle top-speed, restricted maximum stereo volume, and more. Additionally, the 2014 Mustang is equipped with Sync wireless connectivity, and when a smartphone is paired to the system, the 911 Assist feature is active, putting a live operator in touch with the car's occupants in the event of an air bag deployment.

5) In crash-test evaluations, the 2014 Mustang Coupe receives a 4-star (out of 5 stars) overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates both Mustang Coupe and Convertible body styles a "Good"--the Institute's highest--in the moderate offset frontal impact test and the rear-impact injury prevention test. In side-impact tests, the Mustang Coupe is rated "Acceptable" by the IIHS, while the Mustang Convertible is rated "Good."
