5 Fast Facts About the 2014 Ford Fusion

By Jeff Youngs, May 10, 2013
Ford redesigned the Fusion for the 2013 model year, and the new Fusion is a hit with critics and customers alike. In fact, Ford is setting sales records with its popular family sedan, but the company isn't resting on its laurels for 2014. The 2014 Ford Fusion lineup expands, a new engine debuts, and the automaker adds new paint colors and additional options to entice midsize sedan shoppers.

1) A new 1.5-liter, EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine debuts for the 2014 Fusion, delivering nearly as much horsepower and torque as the 1.6-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine it replaces. Preliminarily, the new engine is rated to generate 177 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque, while delivering a slight improvement in fuel economy.

2) The new 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine solves a problem that Ford faces in global markets served by the Fusion and its twin, the Ford Mondeo. In some parts of the world, the existing 1.6-liter engine exceeds displacement limits to qualify for certain tax benefits. Changing to a 1.5-liter engine gives consumers in those regions a better reason to choose this sedan. For U.S. customers, Ford plans to continue offering the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine in Fusion SE models equipped with a manual gearbox.

3) A less expensive 2014 Fusion Hybrid S model debuts this year, slotting into the lineup beneath the Fusion Hybrid SE. Pricing for the new Fusion Hybrid S was not finalized as this article was written. In 2013, the Fusion Hybrid SE cost $27,995 including the $795 destination charge.

4) Optional inflatable rear seat belts enhance safety for the 2014 Fusion, helping to cushion impact forces in a collision. This new extra-cost upgrade is added to a car that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) called a "Top Safety Pick Plus" in 2013, and which earned a 5-star (out of 5 stars) overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last year. As this article is written, crash-test ratings for the 2014 Fusion were unavailable.

5) The 2014 Ford Fusion's option list expands this year, adding ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and performance tires. Ford also adds equipment to the SE Luxury package, adding remote engine starting and a passive keyless entry system with push-button ignition for 2014. A new Brick Red Premium Leather package is also offered, and the 2014 Fusion gets new Dark Side and Sunset paint colors, the Dune-colored interior is now available with Sterling Gray exterior paint, and a new Soft Ceramic off-white interior color is available.
