5 Fast Facts About the 2013 Mazda 3

By Jeff Youngs, March 13, 2013
Mazda is preparing to introduce a redesigned Mazda 3 for the 2014 or 2015 model year, but that has not kept the automaker from making numerous changes to the 2013 Mazda 3 model. This year, a new color touchscreen infotainment system debuts that includes SMS text messaging capability, Pandora Internet radio, e911 Assist services, and a navigation system. All models gain additional standard equipment this year, and Mazda expands availability of the SkyActiv powertrain for 2013. Want to learn more? Here are 5 additional fast facts about the 2013 Mazda 3.

1.) Mazda sells the 2013 Mazda 3 as a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback in Mazda 3 i, Mazda 3 s, and Mazdaspeed 3 model series, in a choice between SV, Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels (depending on model series).

2.) Four different engines are available for the 2013 Mazda 3. The Mazda 3 i SV has a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering 148 horsepower with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive. The Mazda 3 s is equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 167 horsepower, connected to a choice between a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The Mazdaspeed 3 has a direct-injected, turbocharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering 263 horsepower. A 6-speed manual gearbox, a limited-slip differential, and a Mazda Advanced Torque Management System are standard for the Mazdaspeed 3 model.

3.) All other Mazda 3 models have a SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection. It generates 155 horsepower, and is offered with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The benefit of choosing the SkyActiv engine is a fuel economy rating of 38 mpg to 40 mpg in combined driving, depending on body style and transmission. Compare that to other models, which range from 21 mpg in combined driving for the Mazdaspeed 3, to 28 mpg in combined driving for the Mazda 3i SV with a manual gearbox.

4.) Mazda offers several safety-related technologies for the 2013 Mazda 3. Models equipped with the optional navigation system include e911 emergency notification service, which can help speed rescuers to the scene of an accident. A blind spot monitoring system is optional for the Mazda 3 i Touring and Mazdaspeed 3 models, and standard for Grand Touring models. The MAZDA3 i Grand Touring and Mazdaspeed 3 models can be optioned with rain-sensing wipers and an adaptive front lighting system, features that are standard on the Mazda 3 s Grand Touring.

5.) In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests, the 2013 Mazda 3 receives an overall rating of 4 stars (out of 5 stars). Note, however, that the vehicle's side-impact crash protection rating is 3 stars, and that the front passenger, side-impact crash protection rating is just 2 stars. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2013 Mazda 3 is named a "Top Safety Pick."
