5 Fast Facts About the 2013 GMC Sierra 3500HD

When it comes to carrying or towing a significant amount of weight, nothing beats a full-size heavy-duty pickup truck. Within the GMC hierarchy of trucks, it is the 2013 Sierra 3500HD that is the most capable model, able to tackle the biggest of jobs, and dealers are offering discounts as GMC readies a replacement for its workhorse pickup. If this sounds appealing to you, here are 5 things you should know about the 2013 GMC Sierra 3500HD.

1.) Assembled in Michigan and in Indiana, the 2013 GMC Sierra 3500HD is offered as a regular cab, an extended cab, and a crew cab model in a choice between four trim levels: Work Truck (WT), SLE, SLT, and Denali. The SLT trim level is unavailable for regular-cab trucks, while the luxurious Denali trim level is offered only on the Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab.

2.) A 6.0-liter V-8 engine is standard equipment for the 2013 GMC Sierra 3500HD, an E85-compatible power plant generating 322 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission with a Tow/Haul Mode delivers power to the rear or all four wheels. With the optional 4-wheel-drive system, Sierra 3500HD WT models have a manual transfer case, while the SLE, SLT and Denali models provide an electronic 4WD system controlled using a rotary dial on the dashboard.

3.) The 2013 Sierra 3500HD is offered with an optional 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 engine, rated to deliver 397 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and 765 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm. The Duramax engine is B20 biodiesel-compatible, and powers the Sierra 3500HD through an Allison 1000 6-speed automatic transmission equipped with a Tow/Haul Mode and engine grade braking. To further control downhill speeds and reduce brake wear, an engine exhaust braking system is also standard with this engine. Additionally, the Duramax engine is equipped with a selective catalytic reduction after-treatment system requiring refills of its Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) every 5,000 miles. In cold weather, the engine's glow plug cycle takes no longer than three seconds at temperatures as low as 20 below zero, and a high-idle mode switch helps to warm the truck's interior faster on frigid days.

4.) Trailer Sway Control and Hill Start Assist are standard features on Sierra 3500HD models equipped with a single-rear-wheel axle setup. GMC also equips every Sierra 3500HD with a Heavy-Duty Trailering Package that includes a trailer hitch platform, a 2.5-inch receiver, a 7-wire harness, an integrated trailer brake controller, and a heavy-duty automatic locking rear differential. Maximum payload capacity, depending on the model selected, is 7,222 lbs. and the Sierra 3500HD tows up to 13,000 lbs. with the conventional trailer hitch and a single rear-wheel axle setup, and up to 18,000 lbs. with the conventional trailer hitch and a dual rear-wheel axle configuration. Set the truck up for fifth-wheel towing, and it can handle a trailer weighing 23,100 lbs.

5.) GMC offers the 2013 Sierra 3500HD in a luxury-themed Denali trim level, combined with the buyer's choice of a single rear-wheel or a dual rear-wheel axle. Standard upgrades with this model include leather front seats with heat, ventilation, and 12-way power adjustment; a heated steering wheel; a premium surround-sound audio system; and brushed metallic accents combined with woodgrain cabin trim. Denali models also feature additional chrome exterior trim, polished 20-inch wheels, side steps, and heated power retractable side mirrors.
