5 Fast Facts About the 2013 Cadillac CTS

By Jeff Youngs, February 22, 2013
For a decade, the Cadillac CTS has largely defined this luxury division of General Motors, serving as the first model to wear the brand's now familiar Art & Science design themes and proving to be the automaker's most popular model. In fact, in 2012, following the discontinuation of the DTS and the STS models, the CTS performed the starring role in Cadillac showrooms, the only model in a lineup that also included the Escalade and SRX SUVs.

Today, the Cadillac CTS is due for a redesign that will move it closer in size and price to traditional midsize luxury models, and dealers are making deals on the aging luxury sport coupes, sedans, and wagons. Should you decide a discounted 2013 Cadillac CTS interests you, here are 5 things you may want to know before buying one.

1.) The 2013 Cadillac CTS is sold as a 4-passenger coupe, 5-passenger sedan, and a 5-passenger wagon. The CTS Coupe is a 2+2 model, meaning it seats only four passengers. The CTS wagon is a rare model, offering 25.4 cubic feet of room behind the rear seat and 58 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume with the rear seat folded down. For comparison, the Cadillac SRX SUV measures 29.9 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 61.1 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down.

2.) A 270-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 is the standard engine for the 2013 Cadillac CTS Sedan. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission that drives the car's rear wheels, with a 6-speed automatic and all-wheel drive sitting on the options list. Optional for the CTS Sedan but standard for the CTS Coupe and CTS Wagon, a direct-injection, 3.6-liter V-6 engine generates 318 horsepower, delivered to the rear or all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission.

3.) Cadillac sells the 2013 CTS Coupe, Sedan and Wagon in a performance-tuned trim level called the CTS-V. The 2013 CTS-V is equipped with a supercharged, 556-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine--the most powerful engine in Cadillac's history. It helped the CTS-V to become the first production sedan to ever circle Germany's Nurburgring racetrack in fewer than eight minutes, running on street tires. According to Cadillac, acceleration to 60 mph takes 3.9 seconds for the CTS-V Coupe and CTS-V Sedan, while the CTS-V Wagon gets to 60 mph in 4 seconds flat. Fuel economy with the optional automatic transmission measures 14 mpg in combined driving.

4.) The 2013 Cadillac CTS is rated a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and receives a 5-star crash-test rating, the best possible, in every frontal-impact and side-impact crash test conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additionally, the CTS is equipped with OnStar telematics and one free year of Directions and Connections service. As a part of this feature, Automatic Crash Response activates if the air bags deploy, and can speed rescue personnel to the vehicle's exact location to hasten assistance. Unfortunately, the CTS is not offered with several modern safety technologies that are available for the less expensive ATS, including forward-collision alert, Automatic Collision Preparation, lane-departure warning, Front and Rear Automatic Braking, Full-speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control, and a Safety Alert Seat.

5.) Every 2013 Cadillac CTS is built in Lansing, Michigan, and is equipped with a standard Cadillac Shield warranty and Premium Care Maintenance program. Cadillac Shield provides a limited warranty for the entire car for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles of ownership, and Cadillac includes free scheduled maintenance during that period. The powertrain warranty lasts for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Additionally, Cadillac supplies 24-hour roadside assistance and free courtesy transportation during repairs covered by the warranty.
