2015 Vehicle Dependability Study: Most Dependable Small Sedans

2015 Vehicle Dependability Study: Most Dependable Small Sedans

By Christian Wardlaw,

In order to measure design- and defect-related problems with 3-year-old vehicles, J.D. Power annually surveys original owners of such vehicles in order to determine what has gone right and what has gone wrong with older cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans. Based on the collected data, J.D. Power publishes its findings in the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), and from this information the company formulates Power Circle Ratings--consumer-friendly reflections of the study results. Consumers can then reference these ratings when researching a vehicle purchase.

This Most Dependable Small Sedans guide highlights those models that receive a Power Circle Rating of 4, 4.5, or 5 out of a possible 5 for overall vehicle dependability after three years of ownership. (For a list of the top-rated midsize and large sedans, see the separate guide.)

2012 Buick Verano
A new, entry-level Buick sedan, the Verano debuted for the 2012 model year. Equipped with a 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the Verano was one of the quietest vehicles in its segment, according to Buick.

The 2012 Buick Verano receives an overall Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4.5 out of 5.

2012 Honda Civic
Honda redesigned the popular Civic for 2012, offering the car with gasoline, hybrid, and natural gas powertrains. The racy Civic Si version returned to the lineup, too. At the time, Honda said the new Civic was more fuel-efficient and technologically advanced than the model it replaced.

The 2012 Honda Civic receives an overall Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4.5 out of 5.

2012 Lexus IS
Though the Lexus IS sedan was seven years old by 2012, the automaker made no changes for the year aside from installing new wheels and offering new color choices for the performance-tuned IS F variant. In addition to the IS F, this Lexus came in IS 250 and IS 350 model series.

The 2012 Lexus IS receives an overall Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4.5 out of 5.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Mercedes-Benz made several changes to its popular entry-level C-Class for the 2012 model year. A new 2-door coupe version debuted, and a new C250 model with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine became available. Mercedes also improved the C350 model's fuel economy, upgraded the available transmissions, and made minor styling changes to the car, inside and out.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class receives an overall Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2012 Toyota Corolla
Toyota's popular compact car, the 5-passenger Corolla, received additional standard equipment for the 2012 model year while a new Premium package installed a navigation system and voice-recognition technology. Every Corolla continued with a 132-horsepower, 4-cylinder engine and a choice between a manual and an automatic transmission.
