2013 Lexus Fast Facts Guide

2013 Lexus Fast Facts Guide

By Jeff Youngs, April 02, 2013
With the 2013 Lexus model lineup, the luxury automaker says that it seeks to establish a new corporate "face" for its products, in the form of what it calls a "spindle-style" grille design. All 2013 Lexus models except the GX SUV and the popular IS lineup have this new signature styling trait, and the IS gets the new look for 2014 in conjunction with its first complete redesign in nearly a decade. Additionally, Lexus is making a performance push this year, launching a new F Sport lineup of sport-tuned models. The paragraphs below highlight the changes to each 2013 Lexus model, provide EPA fuel-economy ratings, and summarize how well they perform in crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

2013 Lexus CT
The most affordable way to own a Lexus is also the most fuel-efficient way to own a Lexus. The 2013 Lexus CT 200h is a 5-door hatchback model based on the same platform and gas-electric hybrid powertrain as the Toyota Prius, but with an extra dose of luxury. This year, the CT 200h is equipped with a standard power sunroof. The optional navigation system adds Lexus Enform services and HD Radio, and new paint colors are available for the 2013 CT 200h.

Lexus CT 200h fuel-economy ratings are 43 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. The reason the city number is higher is because the CT 200h is a full hybrid, meaning that it can operate at low speeds, such as in city traffic, on the electricity from the battery pack without using the gasoline engine. In terms of crash-test ratings, the IIHS calls the CT 200h a "Top Safety Pick." The NHTSA has not performed crash tests on this vehicle.

2013 Lexus ES
The 2013 Lexus ES is completely redesigned this year and is offered for the first time as a hybrid model. Highlights of the new ES 350 and ES 300h include a more spacious interior with increased rear-seat room, updated infotainment technology, environmentally friendly Nu-Luxe leatherette upholstery (leather is optional), an optional panoramic sunroof, available Mark Levinson audio with Greenedge speakers, and more.

The 2013 Lexus ES 350 gets 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, while the ES 300h is rated to return 40 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. In NHTSA crash tests, the redesigned Lexus ES receives a 5-star (out of 5 stars) overall rating. The IIHS calls this vehicle a "Top Safety Pick" for 2013.

2013 Lexus GS
In addition to a redesigned 2013 ES model, Lexus also rolls out a brand-new version of the GS sedan this year. Both cars are midsize vehicles, but the front-wheel-drive ES shares its platform with the Toyota Avalon while the GS rides on a rear/all-wheel-drive platform. The GS 350 has a V-6 engine while the GS 450h includes a gas-electric hybrid powertrain. An F Sport version of the GS 350 adds unique styling details as well as handling, steering, and braking enhancements. Additional upgrades include new safety, entertainment, and comfort systems.

Lexus GS fuel-economy ratings range from 19 mpg in the city for the GS 350 AWD to 34 mpg on the highway for the GS 450h. The NHTSA has not performed crash tests on the redesigned 2013 Lexus GS models, but the IIHS has, and names the vehicle a "Top Safety Pick."

2013 Lexus GX
Built on the same platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2013 Lexus GX is one of two members of the family that does not receive the new spindle grille treatment. In fact, Lexus has made no changes to this SUV, which offers genuine off-roading capability in a luxury package. Fuel-economy ratings are 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, and neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has performed crash tests on this model.

2013 Lexus IS
The 2013 Lexus IS enters its final year of production before a complete redesign, and is offered in many varieties. There is a sedan, a convertible with a power-retractable hardtop, and a high-performance Lexus IS F designed to stand toe-to-toe with the BMW M3, Cadillac CTS-V, and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Given its imminent replacement by a new model, changes are limited to an updated version of Lexus Enform services, paint and trim color changes, a new F Sport package for the convertible, and a revised suspension for the IS F.

Lexus IS fuel-economy ratings range from 16 mpg in the city for the IS F model to 30 mpg for the IS 250 model. The IS Sedans receive a 4-star (out of 5 stars) overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA, which has not tested the IS C convertible variant. In IIHS crash tests, the 2013 Lexus IS Sedans receive a "Good" rating for the moderate overlap frontal-impact and the side-impact crash tests, an "Acceptable" rating in the roof crush strength and rear-impact injury prevention tests, and a "Poor" rating in the small overlap frontal-impact test.

2013 Lexus LS
Lexus makes significant modifications to its flagship LS luxury sedan for 2013, re-engineering the vehicle's underlying body structure, restyling the exterior, modifying the mechanicals, and introducing new features. A new F Sport model also joins the 2013 Lexus LS lineup, which includes regular- and extended-wheelbase versions of the LS 460, as well as a gas-electric hybrid model called the LS 600h L.

The Lexus LS 460 is rated to get between 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The hybrid model, the LS 600h L, is estimated to deliver 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The only crash-test result to share is a "Good" rating for the vehicle's performance in the moderate overlap frontal-impact test administered by the IIHS. The LS also provides "Good" protection against injury in rear-impact collisions, according to the Institute.

For 2013, the Lexus LX 570 full-size luxury SUV receives more than just LED running lights and a spindle-style grille. Trailer Sway Control is standard, and this rugged off-roader gains a new Multi-Terrain Select system and an updated Crawl Control system with Turn Assist technology. New wheels, new wood trim for the interior, new keyless access, and improved front-seat ventilation round out the changes for the 2013 LX 570, which is rated to get 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.
