2013 Detroit Auto Show Preview

2013 Detroit Auto Show Preview

By Jeff Youngs, January 09, 2013
The 2013 North American International Auto Show, also known as the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, begins January 14 with a media preview, and is open to the public from January 19 through January 27. Held in Cobo Center in downtown Detroit, the show is expected to showcase numerous new cars, trucks and SUVs in both concept and production formats. Some of the more significant models debuting in Detroit are highlighted below.

Acura MDX Prototype
Acura is planning to launch a redesigned 2014 MDX luxury crossover SUV, and in Detroit will display what it calls an Acura MDX Prototype. Historically, Acura prototype vehicles have fairly accurately represented production models, so the new Acura MDX Prototype likely provides a clear view of the next-generation MDX.

BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe
BMW is redesigning the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models for 2014, and, as a part of the process, is renaming them the 4 Series. In Detroit, BMW will show the Concept 4 Series Coupe, a thinly veiled version of the production 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe. The new 4 Series Coupe is longer, lower and wider than a 3 Series Sedan, with subtle styling changes to better differentiate it as a distinct model.

2014 Cadillac ELR
Cadillac is expected to introduce a new extended-range electric vehicle called the ELR. Based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Volt, the 2014 Cadillac ELR is a 4-passenger luxury coupe with an electric powertrain. When the initial battery charge is depleted, a gasoline engine serves as a generator, with its output converted into electricity to power the car. In rare instances, the gasoline engine may directly drive the car's wheels. The ELR can be recharged using a standard household power outlet, or a quick-charge outlet.
