Luxury, Stretched SUVs, EVs to Bow at 2018 Beijing Motor Show

By Philly Murtha, April 16, 2018
SUVs and green, fuel-efficient electric vehicles (EVs) will shine at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, a biannual auto show in the world’s largest new-vehicle market. This year’s Beijing auto show runs from April 25-May 4.

Last year, China auto sales reached 28.9 million units, with SUV share climbing to 43%, according to J.D. Power China. This year, EV and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales are up in triple digits, with help from government subsidies.

Automakers posting higher sales shares in the U.S. market in March, including General Motors, BMW, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), and Volkswagen, will show off new products for China and glimpse a few global introductions. Majors Ford Motor Co., Hyundai/Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan Motor, and Toyota Motor also will preview new design directions in China.

Highlights of possible previews:

GM’s Buick brand will unveil two electric models for China, its largest global market. Velite 6 sedan variants (SAIC-GM) will be available with PHEV or pure electric powertrains, and an Enspire electric SUV concept that explores future design and technology will debut. Additionally, FCA’s Jeep brand will debut a Jeep Commander, specially built for China, while Ford plans to preview an all-new Focus compact with new sporty exterior and more technology including adaptive cruise control and one-button self-parking. The newest Focus goes on sale in China this year and in the United States late next year.

On the Asian side, Hyundai and Kia will each unveil one model for China, while Nissan intends to focus on three electric entries and the Terra 4-wheel-drive midsize SUV launching this spring in China. Toyota will preview PHEV variants of the Corolla compact and Levin small car, reports Automotive News, while Lexus may offer a glimpse of the latest ES compact premium sedan with an even larger double-spindle grille.

Among Europeans previewing China products, BMW may show an electric X3 compact premium SUV and powerful M2 Competition performance car. Mercedes-Benz will debut a Maybach large premium crossover utility that will share architecture with the GLS and feature an “opulent interior.” A compact Mercedes model for China is rumored. Volkswagen plans to unveil a redesigned Touareg SUV as part of its China SUV portfolio, and Audi plans to debut its first stretched utility, the Q5 L, with 4 extra ins. of rear legroom. The first Jaguar E-Pace SUV variant from Chery-JLR in China will debut.

Besides China’s big six joint venture companies, expect previews from China-owned companies, including BYD Co., Geely (owner of Volvo), Great Wall Motors (SUV maker) plus Hybrid Kinetic Group (HKG), Chery, and Baidu (self-driving car tech).
