First introduced for the 1998 model year, the Volvo V70 is a 4-door station wagon version of the S60 4-door sedan which is only available with a front-wheel-drive powertrain. The V70 seats up to 5 passengers in two rows of seats. The V70 features a blind-spot information system (BLIS), personal car communicator, driver alert control, and adaptive cruise control that is bundled with collision warning with brake support. Since the V70 was all-new for 2008, only minor changes are on the list for 2009.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Volvo V70 is offered as a single model. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control; front and rear fog lights; remote keyless entry; 40/20/40-split folding second-row seat; cargo floor rails with movable anchor points; cloth upholstery; tilt/telescoping steering wheel with redundant audio controls; 80-watt, AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary audio input jack; heated outside mirrors; 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat with memory; and P215/55R16 all-season tires on aluminum alloy wheels. For 2009, Volvo has added Bluetooth connectivity and standard front fog lamps.

The V70 is offered with five option packages. ThePremium package includes an auto-dimming mirror with compass, power glass moonroof, leather seats, power passenger seats and real wood inlays among other items. The Collision Avoidance package offers Distance Alert and a lane-departure warning system as two additional safety features. The Technology package includes satellite radio, Volvo's Dynaudio Premium sound system, and high-intensity-discharge headlamps. The Climate package adds heated front seats and headlamp washers, while the Convenience package adds front and rear park assist, along with a power tailgate, humidity sensors, and a sunglasses holder.

The 2009 Volvo V70 comes with a 3.2-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine that makes 235 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. The transmission is a 6-speed automatic with a manual shift gate. The EPA has rated the 2009 V70's fuel economy at 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway. A standard Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) program is designed to add driver confidence. The V70 comes with a 4-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty, and is rated to tow up to 3300 pounds when properly equipped.

All 2009 Volvo V70 models feature dual front air bags, seat-mounted front side-impact air bags, and side curtain air bags for both seating rows as standard equipment. The side-impact air bags have two chambers: one for the hips, which can withstand a greater force, and one for the chest. A tire-pressure monitor, ABS with brake assist (BA), traction control and stability control are also standard. Volvo's WHIPS whiplash protection system, which moves the headrests forward in a crash to lessen the chance of whiplash, is also standard. Adaptive cruise control is bundled with collision warning with brake support. This system uses radar to monitor the area in front of the vehicle. If the car gets too close to the vehicle in front of it, the system flashes a warning light and sounds a buzzer. Waiting for driver input, the system readies the brakes by pushing the pads tightly against the rotors. When the driver does react, brake pressure is amplified to shorten stopping distances. Volvo's BLIS is also optional. It uses cameras in the outside mirrors to detect vehicles in the driver's blind spots and warn the driver with indicator lights. Front and rear park assist is optional.

The 2009 Volvo V70 has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The navigation system on the 2009 Volvo V70 is DVD-based and comes with a remote control. A DVD rear-entertainment system with two screens is also offered. Included in the Collision Avoidance package is Volvo's Driver Alert System, which includes lane-departure warning and Driver Alert Control. Both use a camera mounted in front of the rearview mirror. If the camera detects the car crossing a road line without the use of a turn signal, the lane-departure warning system sounds a chime to alert the driver. Driver Alert Control analyzes data collected by the camera and evaluates if the driver is in danger of losing control of the vehicle. If the system determines the driver is driving erratically, it sounds an audible warning and flashes a cup of coffee symbol in the information display to urge the driver to take a break.
