What's New for 2015:
  • Sports wagon version of S60 sedan added to lineup
  • Front-wheel or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD)
  • Standard turbocharged engines
  • Debuts new Drive-E technology
  • Numerous safety systems
  • Maximum cargo capacity measures 43.8 cu. ft.

The 2015 Volvo V60 is a station wagon version of the Volvo S60 sedan, returning a traditional wagon model to the automaker's lineup. The V60 Sportwagon faces few competitors that have not been transformed into a crossover SUV of some sort. Now that the Acura TSX wagon and Cadillac CTS wagon are discontinued, the BMW 3 Series wagon is the Volvo V60's primary direct competitor.

Models and Features
Volvo sells the 2015 V60 in T5 and T6 model series, and in standard, Premier, Premier Plus, Platinum, R-Design, and R-Design Platinum trim levels. Premier trim adds leather seats, keyless passive entry, adaptive digital instrumentation, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and an upgraded wheel design. Premier Plus trim expands upon that with a reversing camera, power-retractable side mirrors, universal garage door opener, and a grocery bag holder. Platinum versions gain a navigation system, premium sound system, interior accent lighting, and more.

The V60 T6 R-Design includes these features plus unique design details intended to lend the car a sportier appearance. Sport seats, R-Design interior trim, an R-Design steering wheel with paddle shifters, sport pedals, sport suspension, and active bi-xenon headlights are also standard for this version of the car. The R-Design Platinum trim level adds navigation, premium sound, and interior accent lighting.

Options and Packages
Once you've settled on a trim package, the 2015 Volvo V60 can be upgraded with a blind-spot information system, Technology package loaded with safety equipment, and a Climate package containing heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, heated windshield, and heated washer jets. Additionally, both versions of the V60 T5 can be upgraded with a Sport package that includes 19-in. wheels, sport suspension, paddle shifters, and sport-bolstered front seats.

Individual upgrades for the new V60 include metallic paint, different aluminum wheel designs, a rear-seat entertainment system, and integrated child booster seats. The V60 T5 Drive-E model is also offered with new Park Assist Pilot technology thanks to its new electric steering.

Under the Hood
Volvo's new Drive-E powertrain is standard for the V60 T5 with FWD. The turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generates 240 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque across a broad spectrum of the rev range, and a new 8-speed automatic transmission powers the front wheels. The transmission offers a Sport mode and manual gear selection, as well as an Eco+ mode that expands operation of the automatic start/stop system, modifies throttle response, engages an Eco Coast function, and puts the climate system into a more economical operation mode.

All-wheel drive is optional for the V60 T5 and standard for the V60 T6. When selected for the T5 model, Volvo swaps out the Drive-E powertrain for a turbocharged, 250-horsepower inline 5-cylinder engine. A turbocharged, 325-horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine is standard for the V60 T6. Each engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2015 Volvo V60 T5 Drive-E model is rated to get 25 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. If you decide that you need AWD, those ratings dip to 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway because the more efficient Drive-E engine is replaced with a less efficient 5-cylinder engine. The most powerful version of the V60, the T6 AWD, is rated to get 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Volvo equips the 2015 V60 Sportwagon with several standard safety features and offers a long list of safety-related upgrades as extra-cost options.

City Safety is included for every version of the V60, an autonomous braking system that operates at speeds below 31 mph and which is designed to help prevent or mitigate low-speed collisions. Optional equipment includes front and rear park-assist sensors, a reversing camera, blind-spot information system, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning system, lane-keeping system, and a Lane Change Merge Aid. The V60 can also be optioned with Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, pedestrian and cyclist detection with Full Auto Brake, Driver Alert Control, Active Headlights, active high-beam headlights, and a Front Blind View Park Assist Camera. Parents might be interested in the V60's available integrated two-stage child booster seats.

The 2015 Volvo V60 had not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as this overview was written.
