A replacement for the Mazda Protégé, the Mazda 3 arrived in the United States for the 2004 model year in 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan body configurations. Imbued with stylish design and engaging driving dynamics, the Mazda 3 was efficient, affordable, and practical, too. For several years, a turbocharged, performance-tuned version was on sale, called the Mazdaspeed 3. It was discontinued after the 2013 model year as the automaker prioritized fuel efficiency over outright speed. Today, the third-generation Mazda 3 can be optioned with features more suitable to a luxury car, supporting the company’s move into premium-brand territory.
