What's New for 2015:
  • Cloth top replaces vinyl top on base model
  • Limited-production 25th Anniversary Edition offered
  • Farewell for third-generation Miata; new model expected for 2016 model year

The 2015 model of the MX-5 Miata represents the final year in the third generation of Mazda's sporty 2-seat roadster, with a new generation on the horizon for 2016. However, the Miata is going out with a flourish by including a limited (100 units, now sold out) 25th Anniversary Edition. The Mazda MX-5 Miata is equipped with a soft convertible top or a power-retractable hardtop. This year, the base model's top, previously made of vinyl, has been upgraded to cloth. Some experts say it's difficult to compare the Miata with other sporty convertibles, but it generally competes with the Mini Cooper, Ford Mustang, Audi TT, Scion FR-S, Fiat 500, and other roadsters or \"pony cars.\"

Models and Features
The Miata is offered in base Sport plus the Club and Grand Touring trim levels. A cloth convertible top is standard, with a retractable hardtop available on the Club and Grand Touring versions and standard on the limited 25th Anniversary Edition. Standard equipment for the MX-5 Miata Sport includes 16-in. aluminum wheels, folding cloth soft top, dual exhaust outlets, and power exterior mirrors. It is equipped with air conditioning, fog lights, power windows, 6-speaker stereo with a CD player and an auxiliary audio input jack, leather-wrapped steering wheel, black cloth upholstery, and a height-adjustable driver's seat.

The Club trim level upgrades to 17-in. wheels, black exterior trim, and a different front and rear fascia. It adds remote keyless entry, power locks, cruise control, trip computer, an upgraded interior that includes a leather-wrapped gearshift knob, and a trip computer. These upgrades are available on the Sport in the form of the Convenience package of options, which comes standard if the buyer chooses the automatic transmission.

The Grand Touring version includes the free option of a beige cloth top (instead of black). Upgrades include leather upholstery, heated seats, automatic climate control, 7-speaker Bose sound system, various cosmetic upgrades to the interior, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The 25th Anniversary Edition Miata features a power-retractable hardtop as standard and adds the Premium and Suspension option packages (described below) as standard equipment. This special edition also features upgraded leather upholstery and distinctive 17-in. wheels.

With either the hardtop or soft top, trunk capacity is 5.3 cu. ft.

Options and Packages
Club and Grand Touring MX-5s qualify for the Suspension package, which includes a sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks and a limited-slip differential (the latter only available with a manual transmission). The Premium package is available only on the Grand Touring and features keyless ignition and entry, xenon headlights, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and satellite radio.

Under the Hood
Every 2015 MX-5 Miata is equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mounted just behind the front axle. It can be paired with either a 5-speed (on the Sport) or 6-speed (on the upper trim levels) manual gearbox. The engine generates 167 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 140 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm. With the optional 6-speed automatic transmission the engine's power rating drops to 158 horsepower at 6,700 rpm. The MX-5 Miata Club features a shock tower brace, and with the manual transmission the roadster includes a standard sport suspension and a limited-slip rear differential. The latter two features are optional for the Grand Touring version of the 2015 Miata.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata are:
  • MX-5 Miata with 5-speed manual transmission: 22/28/25 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • MX-5 Miata with 6-speed manual transmission: 21/28/24 mpg
  • MX-5 Miata with automatic transmission: 21/28/23 mpg

Safety Ratings and Technology
The 2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata is equipped with 4 air bags, traction and stability control, and 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution.

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2015 MX-5 Miata as this overview is written.
