Overview

The Land Rover Range Rover is a full-size luxury sport utility vehicle that was first introduced to the US market in 1970. The flagship of the automaker's model range, the Range Rover is not to be confused with the smaller Range Rover Sport, which is built on a completely different platform. The current Range Rover is a third-generation model, last completely redesigned for the 2002 model year. Designed at a time when Land Rover was under the ownership of BMW Group, the off-road-oriented model shares much of its componentry with the German automaker's previous-generation 7 Series. Land Rover has made a few changes to its Range Rover for 2011. These include an optional 19-speaker audio system, optional second-row reclining seats, and upgrades to the electronic ascent and descent control systems.

The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover is sold in two trims-each well appointed. The standard Range Rover HSE arrives with a full complement of luxury appointments including leather upholstery, air conditioning with tri-zone automatic climate control, full power accessories, sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, front and rear parking sensors, bi-Xenon headlamps, navigation system, Bluetooth phone connectivity, rearview camera, 14-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system, adjustable air suspension with adaptive damping, 19-inch alloy wheels, and more. The Range Rover Supercharged is equipped mostly the same way, but it comes with a locking rear differential, adaptive suspension dampening, and upgraded Brembo brakes.

The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover is offered with one of two engines. The standard engine is a 5.0-liter 8-cylinder rated at 375 horsepower and mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Range Rover Supercharged is fitted with the same 8-cylinder gasoline engine, but it has been fitted with a supercharger to boost output to 510 horsepower. Like its naturally aspirated cousin, it is also bolted to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Both models feature full-time 4-wheel drive and a 2-speed transfer case to optimize gearing in off-road situations. A standard Terrain Response system allows the driver to customize powertrain, suspension, and electronic stability and traction control settings. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Land Rover Range Rover between 12 mpg city and 18 mpg highway, for either powertrain.

The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover HSE starts at a base price of around $80,000 and tops out with the Range Rover Supercharged, which starts at around $96,000.
