The Jeep Liberty is a compact crossover that was introduced in 2002 as a replacement to the original Jeep Grand Cherokee. The current model, a second-generation body style, was introduced for the 2008 model year. Larger and boxier than its predecessor, it offered more room and a standard V6 engine. Mostly a carryover for 2011, the only changes are a new steering wheel and audio/infotainment upgrades.

The Liberty is sold in five different models, and most are offered with a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive. Standard models are called Sport. They are equipped with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, full power equipment, rear 60/40 split-folding seats, six-speaker audio package, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Liberty Jet Sport is upgraded with tinted windows, chrome body side molding, traction control, eight-speaker Infinity audio system, 20-inch wheels, and more.

The Sport 70th Anniversary edition includes equipment such as leather upholstery, driver and front-passenger power seats, heated front seats, six-speaker audio system, 16-inch alloy wheels, and unique 70th Anniversary trim. The Limited Edition model is configured with similar equipment as the Anniversary Edition, but without the unique cosmetics. Lastly, the Renegade model targets off-roaders with an upgraded four-wheel drive system, skid plates, tow hooks, unique trim, 16-inch alloy wheels with off-road tires, and more.

Jeep fits the Liberty with a 3.7-liter, six-cylinder engine rated at 210 horsepower. A four-speed automatic is standard, with rear- or four-wheel drive optional. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Jeep Liberty between 15 mpg city, and 22 mpg highway, depending on driveline.

The 2011 Liberty Sport 4x2 starts with a base price of about $24,000 and tops out with the Liberty Renegade 4x4 model, which starts around $27,500.

The United States government was looking for an inexpensive and rugged off-road reconnaissance car, so they asked dozens of companies to submit bids. After a series of tests, the contract was awarded to Willys. The original "model MB" was soon nicknamed the "Jeep," and the name stuck. The company was bought by AMC in 1970, and then sold to its current owner, Chrysler, in 1998.
