The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mid-size sport utility vehicle that debuted in 1993. Now in its fourth-generation, the vehicle was completely redesigned for the 2011 model year. Interestingly enough, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, and Dodge Durango currently share platforms as a result of the former DiamlerChrysler relationship. The performance-oriented SRT8 rolls into showrooms in mid-2011, but is designated for the 2012 model year.

The Grand Cherokee is offered in four trim levels: Laredo, Limited, and Overland. The standard equipment list includes cloth upholstery, air conditioning with dual-zone settings, automatic headlamps, full power accessories, keyless ignition, auto-dimming rearview mirror, six-speaker audio system, 17-inch alloy wheels, and more. The Limited adds leather upholstery, automatic dual-zone climate control, power passenger seat, back-up camera, bi-xenon headlamps, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, and more. The Overland is configured much like the Limited, but is fitted with unique cosmetic touches, including a wood and leather steering wheel.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered with two engine choices. The standard power plant is a 3.6-liter, six-cylinder engine that's rated at 290 horsepower. The optional engine is a 5.7-liter, eight-cylinder, rated at 360 horsepower. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard, but there are several different optional drivelines. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all models.

Jeep offers three different four-wheel drive systems. Optional on the Laredo is Quadra-Trac I, which is similar to traditional all-wheel drive. Quadra-Trac II is all-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case for improved off-road performance. It is optional on the Limited and Overland. Lastly, the Limited and Overland are offered with Quadra-Drive II, which adds electronic limited-slip differentials to the aforementioned system. The Overland may also be fitted with Quadra-Lift air suspension for additional ground clearance. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee between 14 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, depending on powertrain.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x2 starts with a base price of about $30,500 and tops out with the Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4, which starts around $40,000.

The United States government was looking for an inexpensive and rugged off-road reconnaissance car, so they asked dozens of companies to submit bids. After a series of tests, the contract was awarded to Willys. The original "model MB" was soon nicknamed the "Jeep," and the name stuck. The company was bought by AMC in 1970, and then sold to its current owner, Chrysler, in 1998.
