Hyundai emphasizes value with its Santa Fe, a midsize crossover SUV that made its debut in the 2001 model year as the Korean brand's first entry into the SUV market. It's slotted between the Tucson and the Veracruz in Hyundai's expanded lineup of SUVs. The Santa Fe is a 5-seater, with an optional third row to accommodate two more passengers, and is available in front- or all-wheel drive. The 2009 model is a carryover from the previous year.

The 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe comes in three trim levels. The base Santa Fe GLS features 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry, trip computer, some power accessories, 6-speaker sound system, cloth upholstery, and optional sunroof. The Santa Fe SE and Limited trims both upgrade to a larger engine and 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, towing prep package, and roof crossrails. The Santa Fe Limited adds all-leather upholstery and the sunroof as standard equipment, plus heated front seats, power driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an upgraded sound system. A navigation system is optional with the Limited trim. Maximum cargo capacity, with rear seats folded, comes to 78 cubic feet, according to Hyundai.

The 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe's standard power plant is a 185-horsepower, 2.7-liter V-6 engine, coupeed with a 5-speed manual (standard) or a 4-speed automatic transmission (optional). The Santa Fe SE and Limited trims upgrade to a 242-horsepower, 3.3-liter V-6 engine and a standard 5-speed automatic transmission. Properly equipped, the Santa Fe can tow 3500 pounds, the manufacturer claims.

Standard safety features on the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe include anti-lock disc brakes, traction control, stability control, front side air bags, overhead curtain air bags, and active front-seat head restraints. In government crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Santa Fe 5 (out of 5) stars for frontal- and side-impact occupant protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Santa Fe highest-possible \"Good\" ratings in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests.
