Overview

What's New for 2013:
  • Honda makes no changes to the Insight for 2013

Exterior Features
The 2013 Honda Insight is offered in base, LX and EX trim levels. The Insight's aerodynamic shape is designed to help maximize fuel economy, and the car features a flat underbody as a result. The base model is equipped with power exterior mirrors, LED taillights, 15-inch wheels with plastic wheel covers, and low-rolling-resistance tires.

Interior Features
The 2012 Honda Insight is a 4-passenger, 5-door hatchback equipped with 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat in use and 31.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat folded.

Standard features include automatic climate control, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and a stereo with a CD player and an auxiliary audio input jack. The driver's seat offers manual height adjustment, and the Insight is equipped with a multi-information display.

Optional Features
The Honda Insight LX adds cruise control, floor mats, 4-speaker audio system with a USB port, illuminated steering wheel controls, map lights, and a center console storage box with an armrest.

The Honda Insight EX is equipped with 15-inch aluminum wheels, heated exterior mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters. Bluetooth connectivity, 6-speaker sound system, dual visor vanity mirrors, glove box light, and seatback storage pockets are also included on the EX trim level. A navigation system with a reversing camera is optional on this trim.

Under the Hood
The Honda Insight is what is referred to as a \"mild hybrid\" rather than a \"full hybrid\" because it cannot operate on battery power alone. Rather, Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology pairs a 10-kilowatt electric motor with a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to generate a combined 98 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 123 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,000 and 1,500 rpm. The nickel-metal hydride battery runs the Insight's accessories when idling in traffic or coasting to a stop, and regenerative brakes recharge the battery.

To maximize fuel economy, the Insight is equipped with an Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist) and an ECON mode that modifies throttle and transmission response, climate and cruise control operation, and idle/stop duration to maximize fuel economy, Honda says. The standard multi-information display shows \"leaves\" that are earned as a reward for going easy on the gas, helping to encourage economical driving.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Honda Insight are 41/44/42 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Safety
Honda equips the Insight with 6 air bags, traction and stability control, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Additionally, the Insight is designed to Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure standards, which intend to deflect crash energy away from the interior in the event of a collision. The Insight also features a pedestrian injury mitigation front structure design.

As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2013 Honda Insight. However, the structurally identical 2012 model was named a \"Top Safety Pick\" by the Institute.

Everyone's got a pretty good sense of what the German manufacturers have planned on the diesel front. After all, it's their strong suit and the core of their business in their home market and throughout Europe. But when it comes to Honda, particularly in the U.S., the picture is more complex. After all, this is the company that has the highest corporate average fuel economy, was the first to introduce a hybrid car in America, and prides itself on its environmental image. The backstory that has been passed along is this: Honda engineers were not eager to introduce a diesel in the European market, though they were told it was key to success there. So they designed what they like to call a "Honda" diesel and introduced it to the market with a psychedelic ad narrated by Garrison Keillor.
