Exterior Features
The Honda Fit is a compact 4-door hatchback built to provide the driver with maximum visibility, according to the manufacturer. Honda calls its design \"super-forward aero-form.\" The Fit can carry up to 5 passengers.

Interior Features
The 2012 Honda Fit is offered in two trim levels. The base trim features air conditioning, full power accessories, cruise control, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, split-folding rear seats, 4-speaker audio system, 15-inch steel wheels, and cloth upholstery. The Fit Sport steps up to a leather-wrapped steering wheel and adds fog lamps, rear spoiler, 6-speaker sound system, sport body kit, 16-inch alloy wheels, and gearshift paddles with the automatic transmission. Maximum cargo volume is 57.3 cubic feet.

Optional Features
A touch-screen navigation system with voice controls and a digital audio card reader is available on the Sport trim.

Under the Hood
All trims of the 2012 Honda Fit employ a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 117 horsepower. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on both base and Sport trims, with a 5-speed automatic optional. Fit Sport models with an automatic transmission feature steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. All Fits employ front-wheel drive.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Honda Fit are:
- Fit with manual transmission: 27/33/29 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Fit with automatic transmission: 28/35/31 mpg

Standard safety features on the Honda Fit include anti-lock brakes (front disc and rear drum), traction control, front-seat side air bags, side curtain air bags, and active front head restraints.

In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Fit received a \"Good\" rating--the Institute's highest--in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests, and \"Acceptable\" in roof strength tests.

Everyone's got a pretty good sense of what the German manufacturers have planned on the diesel front. After all, it's their strong suit and the core of their business in their home market and throughout Europe. But when it comes to Honda, particularly in the U.S., the picture is more complex.
