Exterior Features
Ford offers the 2013 Transit Connect as a 2-seat cargo van or as a 5-passenger wagon. The Transit Connect Van is offered in XL or XLT trim, while the Transit Connect Wagon is available in XLT or XLT Premium trim.

Standard equipment for the Transit Connect XL Van includes 15-inch steel wheels with plastic wheel covers, gray bumpers and trim, side mirrors designed to help the driver see in the van's blind spots, and sliding doors on each side of the van.

Interior Features
The Transit Connect XL Van includes air conditioning, cloth seats, height-adjustable driver's seat, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, stereo with an auxiliary audio input jack, and a 12-volt power point. Standard equipment also includes front carpeting, vinyl flooring in the cargo area, and an overhead storage shelf with a net.

The Transit Connect Van can carry up to 129.6 cubic feet of cargo and up to 1,600 pounds of payload. The cargo floor is just over 6 feet long and offers a liftover height of less than 2 feet.

Optional Features
The Transit Connect XLT Van adds body-color bumpers, dual front map lights, rear defroster, heated power side mirrors, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and an anti-theft alarm system.

Switching to the passenger models, the Transit Connect XLT Wagon is further equipped with a second-row bench seat, carpeting in the rear seating area, CD player, rear door windows, sliding door window, body-color mirrors and door handles, upgraded grille, and fog lights.

The Transit Connect XLT Platinum Wagon is the top of the lineup, and is equipped with flip-open third-row window glass, upgraded exterior trim, and rear cargo door storage.

All four versions of the van can be equipped with a Crew Chief telematics and vehicle diagnostics system. The XL Van is offered with a Power package including power windows, power door locks, and cruise control, and the XLT Platinum Wagon is offered with a Taxi package that includes a number of modifications to prepare the vehicle for taxi duty.

Additional upgrades include floor mats, reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, and Sync smartphone connectivity with a USB port, extra key fobs, splashguards, and a heavy-duty battery. All except for the XL Van offer remote engine starting, all except the XLT Platinum Wagon can be equipped with rear cargo doors that open wider, and the Transit Connect Van models are offered with rear cargo door and sliding side door windows.

Ford also offers a Mobility package, which prepares the Transit Connect to accept equipment designed to serve physically challenged drivers and passengers.

Under the Hood
The 2013 Ford Transit Connect is equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 136 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 128 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,500 rpm. The engine can be converted to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied propane gas (LPG). A 4-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the front wheels.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Ford Transit Connect models are:

  • Transit Connect Van: 21/27/23 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Transit Connect Wagon: 22/27/24 mpg

The 2013 Ford Transit Connect is equipped with dual front and dual side curtain air bags for the front-seat occupants, traction control, stability control, roll stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2013 Transit Connect gets a 2-star (out of 5 stars) overall crash-test rating. Protection for the driver and front-seat passenger in a frontal impact is rated 3 stars, while side-impact protection for the driver is rated 2 stars. The driver protection rating if the van slides laterally into a pole rates 1 star, the lowest rating possible. The Transit Connect's rollover-resistance rating is 3 stars.

As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not performed crash tests on the 2013 Transit Connect.
