What Changed for 2009:
  • More standard features including ambient lighting, satellite radio, 5-speed automatic transmission
  • New, more powerful and fuel-efficient 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine
  • Electronic stability control system offered as an option
  • New stylish Blue Suede Appearance package with choice of four new colors
  • Seven-color ambient lighting system standard on SEL models
  • Traction control standard on SE and SEL models with V-6 engines
The 2009 Ford Fusion is more powerful and fuel efficient than last year's model, with the new, 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, which is the same engine that powers the 2009 Ford Escape. Ford introduced the midsize 4-door Fusion sedan with the notable 3-bar grille in 2006 to replace the Taurus and compete with high-volume midsize rivals such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima. Since the Fusion debuted, Ford rebadged the Five Hundred large conventional sedan with the famous Taurus name. The Fusion still is based on the Mazda6 stretched platform and shares its architecture with the Mercury Milan and the Lincoln MKZ. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (FWD and AWD) versions are offered. Front-drive models come with 4-cylinder or V-6 power, while AWD Fusions only are powered by the V-6. The Fusion seats 5, and offers 15.8 cubic feet of cargo trunk space, which can be expanded thanks to folding rear seats and an available fold-flat front passenger seat.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Ford Fusion comes in three trim levels: S, SE and SEL. All offer front-wheel drive (FWD), and SE and SEL are available with all-wheel drive (AWD). Standard equipment on the S includes: cloth upholstery; 4-way manually adjustable driver's seat; 60/40-split folding rear seat; air conditioning; tilt/telescoping steering wheel; power locks, windows and mirrors; front and side curtain air bags; and a tire-pressure-monitoring system. The SE adds a 6-way power driver's seat with manual lumbar adjustment; fold-flat front passenger seat; sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors; steering-wheel audio controls; fog lamps; Sirius satellite radio; MP3 audio input jack; 6-disc CD changer; two additional speakers; trip computer; and aluminum wheels. The SEL gets automatic headlights; automatic climate control; leather-wrapped steering wheel; heated outside mirrors; keypad entry; auto-dimming rearview mirror; and 16-inch machined aluminum wheels.

Options start with a new personal style appearance package for 2009. The Blue Suede package (FWD only) is standard on Fusion SEL and optional on the SE. It offers four new exterior metallic colors (Dark Ink Blue, Brilliant Silver, Sport Blue and Tuxedo Black), charcoal interior trim with blue suede accents, and 18-inch wheels. Ford also is offering a Sport Appearance package (FWD only), which features a sport suspension; black chrome grille rear lip spoiler; dual chrome exhaust tips; and red seat inserts and stitching. Also available are an optional 5-speed automatic transmission; AdvanceTrac electronic stability control system; and the Ford Sync communications and entertainment system co-developed with Microsoft. Other options on SEL models include leather seat trim; DVD-based navigation system; Sirius satellite radio; heated front seats; sunroof; and an Audiophile stereo system with 6-disc CD changer and 8 speakers.

The 2009 Ford Fusion's base engine is the new, 2.3-liter 4-cylinder unit that delivers 160 hp and 156 lb.-ft. of torque and can be mated with a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. When the 4-cylinder engine is paired with the 5-speed automatic, the Fusion's powertrain qualifies as a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) for consumers in states adopting California emission standards. A 3.0-liter V-6 engine that produces 221 hp and 205 lb.-ft. of torque is available for added performance on the SE and SEL trim levels. The V-6 engine comes only with a 6-speed automatic transmission. FWD is offered with both engines, and the V-6 is available with AWD.

EPA mileage estimates for the 2009 Ford Fusion are 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway for the 4-cylinder engine with manual transmission-and with 5-speed automatic transmission, 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway. Mileage estimates for the version with the V-6 engine and automatic transmission with FWD are 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway for the V-6 engine with AWD. A hybrid version of the Fusion is coming soon, as a 2010 model.

The 2009 Fusion features six standard air bags and Ford's Personal Safety System with safety belt pre-tensioners and sensors to measure front-seat passenger weight and crash severity level. Traction control is standard on all AWD models and SE and SEL FWD models with V-6 engines. Rear park assist is optional.

In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Fusion earned 5-star ratings for driver and front passenger protection in frontal crash tests as well as a 5-star rating for the driver and a 4-star rating for rear passengers in side-impacts. The AWD version receives 5 stars and the FWD version earns a 4-star rating for rollover resistance. Although the 2009 model hasn't been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2008 model received the best, or \"Good,\" ratings in frontal and side-impact crash tests from the Institute.

Developed with Microsoft, Ford Sync, which is standard on SEL models, provides a hands-free and voice-activated link to cell phones and most media players. It recognizes your cell phone's phonebook, reads text messages through the audio system and allows occupants to respond with one of 15 available messages. When an MP3 player is plugged in, Sync charges it and can access a complete playlist. Occupants can ask Sync to play a specific song, artist or music genre. Sync will also stream songs wirelessly from a source like a phone/MP3 player using Bluetooth technology. Ford's DVD navigation system is voice-activated for added convenience, and is standard on the Fusion SEL.
