Introduction
The 2014 Ford C-Max is a front-wheel-drive, hybrid wagon available in regular and plug-in versions, offering up to 100 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent), 52.6 cu. ft. of cargo space, and room for 5 passengers. Competitors include the Chevrolet Volt, Honda Fit EV, Nissan Leaf, Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid, and the Toyota Prius V.

Models and Features
Ford sells the 2014 C-Max in three trim levels, starting with the Hybrid SE, which is well-equipped with dual-zone climate control, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leather interior accents, the company's Sync infotainment system, 17-in. alloy wheels, and a height-adjustable driver's seat. Other standard features include power turn signal mirrors, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and a USB input jack.

One step up from the SE is the C-Max Hybrid SEL, home to the MyFord Touch infotainment system, as well as push-button start, heated power front seats with 10-way adjustment for the driver, leather upholstery, auto-dimming rearview mirror, fog lights, and rain-sensing wipers.

The 2014 C-Max Hybrid Energi variant is similar to the SEL, though it features a plug-in powertrain. Drivers benefit from a smartphone app that highlights nearby charging stations, allows them to schedule a charging time, and more.

Options and Packages
Depending on which trim level is selected, the 2014 Ford C-Max can be upgraded with desirable amenities like heated mirrors, satellite radio, navigation, remote start, and a panoramic glass-panel roof. A rearview camera and front and rear park-assist sensors provide an extra degree of safety, while a parallel parking aid takes much of the hassle out of squeezing into a tight spot. Ford's foot-activated power liftgate is also optional.

Under the Hood
Every 2014 Ford C-Max is dependent upon a 2.0-liter, Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that directs output to the front wheels. With assistance coming from an electric motor, the powertrain delivers 188 net horsepower. From there, the SE/SEL and Energi take different paths, with the former utilizing a 1.4-kW Lithium-ion battery that allows the car to travel up to 62 mph in full-electric mode, whereas the latter features a 7.6-kW Lithium-ion battery and a top electric-only speed of 85 mph. The plug-in C-Max Energi can be recharged in just 2.5 hours using a 240-volt outlet, or 7 hours with 120 volts.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2014 Ford C-Max's base hybrid powertrain is capable of averaging 45 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway, and 43 mpg combined. For plug-in models like the C-Max Energi, the EPA uses a miles-per-gallon-equivalent (MPGe) rating, which, in this case, amounts to 108 MPGe city, 92 MPGe highway, and 100 MPGe combined.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Ford C-Max received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 C-Max.
