The 2009 line of heavy-duty (HD) Dodge Ram pickups maintains the rugged big-rig style that first revolutionized Dodge's presence in this segment back in 1994. Compared to the half-ton Ram 1500 series, the three-quarter-ton Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 HD models have beefier components and an available diesel engine for tougher hauling and towing tasks. While the Ram 1500 is redesigned for 2009, the heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 Rams continue with the same design.

Ram HD pickups come in 2-door regular cab, Quad Cab with rear access doors, and stretched 4-door Mega Cab body styles. The Mega Cab, which was introduced in 2006, adds 22 inches of cabin length and features rear seats that can recline up to 37 degrees. Regular cabs have seating for 3, while Quad Cabs and Mega Cabs have seating for up to 6. Two cargo-bed lengths-75 and 96 inches-are offered. All Ram 2500 and short-box Quad Cab Ram 3500 models come with standard rear wheels, while all other Ram 3500s have dual rear wheels.

Rear-wheel-drive (2WD) and 4-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations are available on the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500. Properly equipped, a Ram 2500 can tote up to 3600 pounds of payload and tow up to 13,600 pounds, while a Ram 3500 can haul up to 5130 pounds of payload and tow up to 17,000 pounds.

Model Lineup
Trim levels on the 2009 Dodge Ram HD consist of ST, SXT, SLT, TRX4 Off-Road and top-line Laramie. Available for 2500 models is the off-road-oriented Power Wagon. Standard features on the ST include air conditioning; 40/20/40-split front bench seat; vinyl seats and floor covering; 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo; tilt steering column; trailer wiring harness; and LT245/70R17 on-/off-road tires on steel wheels. SXT models add cloth upholstery; carpeting; cruise control; power windows, locks and mirrors; remote keyless entry; and chromed front and rear bumpers. SLT models get an overhead console with a trip computer and temperature readout; sliding rear window; and LT265/70R17 all-season tires on chromed steel wheels. TRX4 models have tow hooks; skid plates; fog lights; limited-slip differential; and unique off-road tires on aluminum wheels. Laramies add to the SLT dual-zone manual climate control; heated, 6-way power front seats; front center seat cushion storage; auto-dimming rearview mirror; chromed aluminum wheels; Infinity 7-speaker sound system; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; Dodge's UConnect Phone hands-free cell phone link; power-sliding rear window; and fog lights. The Power Wagon, which is available only for the 2500 Quad Cab, has a higher numeric axle ratio; LT285/70R17 BFGoodrich off-road tires; trailer towing package; fender flares; electronic disconnecting front stabilizer bar; electric locking front and rear differentials; electric winch; and skid plates.

Options on the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 include leather upholstery; sunroof; front bucket seats; Sirius satellite radio; rear DVD entertainment; towing package; trailer towing mirrors; remote engine starting; and Dodge's UConnect GPS hard-drive radio with navigation system.

For 2009, Dodge Ram 2500s come with the next-generation 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine. Output is up from 345 hp and 375 lb.-ft. of torque to 355 hp at 5400 rpm and 395 lb.-ft of torque at 4200 rpm. It comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission. All Ram 3500 models are equipped with a 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel High Output engine that delivers 350 hp at 3013 rpm. When paired with the standard 6-speed manual transmission, the diesel engine's torque rating is 610 lb.-ft. at 1400 rpm. When ordered with the optional 6-speed automatic transmission, the torque rating is 650 lb.-ft. The Cummins diesel engine also features a life-to-major-overhaul interval of 350,000 miles and standard-duty oil-change intervals of 7500 miles. The 4WD system works part-time. It has low-range gearing and should not be driven on dry pavement, Dodge says.

Standard safety features on the 2009 Dodge Ram HD pickups consist of dual front air bags; tire-pressure monitor; and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution. Head-protecting curtain side air bags are optional on all models.

The Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickups have not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institite for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Dodge's MyGIG hard-drive radio and navigation system changes its name to UConnect GPS for 2009. It has a 6.5-inch touch screen and a 30-gigabyte hard drive (up from 20 gigs) to hold music and picture files, as well as navigation map information. The navigation system can be controlled with voice commands and offers real-time traffic information. Songs can be ripped to the hard drive directly from CDs or from a thumb drive plugged into a USB port. It also comes with Dodge's UConnect Phone hands-free cell phone link. This feature uses Bluetooth technology to provide voice-controlled wireless communication between on-board cell phones and an integrated receiver. Bluetooth uses low-power radio communications to link devices over short distances. Multiple Bluetooth-enabled phones can be paired to the system, but one phone, typically that of the main driver, is chosen as the system's main phone.
