Thirty years ago, the first Dodge Caravan rolled off of an assembly line, creating a new class of vehicle called the minivan. Today, the Grand Caravan, originally an extended version of the Caravan, remains one of the best-selling models in the segment. It competes against the Honda Odyssey, Nissan Quest, and Toyota Sienna, and is also available in luxury-oriented guise as the Chrysler Town & Country.

Models and Features
For 2014, Dodge sells the Grand Caravan in American Value Package (AVP), SE, SXT, and R/T trim levels. The Crew trim level is discontinued this year.

According to Dodge, the Grand Caravan AVP is the most affordable new minivan for sale today. It is equipped with air conditioning, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, power exterior mirrors, cruise control, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and LED taillights.

The Grand Caravan SE adds Super Stow 'N Go seating with in-floor storage bins plus triple-zone automatic climate control, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, upgraded sound system, floor console with cupholders, and body-color exterior trim.

Power rear side windows, power-sliding side doors, and a power rear liftgate come standard on the Grand Caravan SXT, along with power-adjustable pedals, power-venting third-row windows, heated exterior mirrors, Stow 'N Place roof rack, and a Super Center Console design.

With the Grand Caravan R/T, Dodge adds a re-tuned suspension, 17-inch aluminum wheels, monochrome exterior appearance, black leather seats, and a premium sound system. The R/T is also equipped with automatic headlights, a security system, and remote engine starting.

Options and Packages
Minivan buyers selecting the Grand Caravan AVP can pay extra for an option package that adds Uconnect Bluetooth, satellite radio, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. This van can also be upgraded with Super Stow 'N Go seating.

The Grand Caravan SE can be optioned with the Uconnect Bluetooth system plus 17-inch aluminum wheels and a Power Window Group including express-down front windows, power second-row windows, and power-venting third-row windows.

For 2014, the Grand Caravan SE is offered as a 30th Anniversary Edition and as a Blacktop Edition. The former adds everything listed above plus unique aluminum wheels, heated outside mirrors, Piano Black interior trim, black seats with silver accent stitching, a black headliner, and special badges. The Blacktop Edition includes a blacked-out grille, black headlamp backgrounds, aluminum wheels with black painted pockets, and a black interior with silver accent stitching.

A single-screen rear-seat DVD entertainment system is also optional for the Grand Caravan SE. It adds a 6.5-inch touch-screen display to the van's dashboard, 9-inch entertainment screen for the second-row seating area, and is packaged with satellite radio, a reversing camera, 40 GB media hard-drive, 2 USB charging ports, HDMI input jacks, 115-volt power outlet, 2 wireless headphones, and a remote control.

For the Grand Caravan SXT, the optional entertainment system can be upgraded to a premium Blu-Ray DVD system with screens for the second- and third-row seats. The SXT also offers the hard-drive touch-screen radio separately from the entertainment system, along with the Uconnect Bluetooth system, a navigation system, and a power driver's seat.

The Grand Caravan SXT can also be optioned with a Security Group (security alarm and remote engine starting); Safety Sphere Group (automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, rear park-assist sensors, rear cross-path detection, blind-spot monitoring); and a Driver Convenience Group (overhead console storage and lighting system, heated front and second-row seats, heated steering wheel, second- and third-row manual side window sun shades). The latter requires the purchase of a Grand Caravan SXT 30th Anniversary Edition.

For the Grand Caravan SXT, the 30th Anniversary Edition is upgraded with polished wheels and Satin Carbon painted pockets, fog lights, chrome exterior trim, and automatic headlights. Inside, the seats have leatherette bolsters and suede inserts, and this package also contains a power driver's seat. Consumers can also get the SXT as the Blacktop Edition, and the only difference for this trim level is that fog lights are included.

The Grand Caravan R/T can be fitted with either of the two entertainment systems, a navigation system, Driver Convenience Group, and a Safety Sphere Group. Additionally, this version is offered with a Trailer Tow Group that gives the minivan a load-leveling height control suspension, heavy-duty engine cooling, and trailer towing equipment.

Under the Hood
The 2014 Grand Caravan is equipped with a 283-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission that powers the front wheels. The driver can select a Fuel Economizer driving mode designed to improve fuel economy.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2014 Grand Caravan is expected to return 17 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg in combined driving.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Grand Caravan earned an overall rating of 4 stars (out of a possible 5 stars). In all individual assessments, the minivan received either a 4-star or a 5-star rating. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not rated the 2014 Grand Caravan's crash-test performance.

A reversing camera is optional for the Grand Caravan SE, SXT and R/T, while the SXT and R/T can be equipped with a Safety Sphere Group that contains automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, rear park-assist sensors, rear cross-path detection, and blind-spot monitoring.
