Overview
Chrysler introduced the compact PT Cruiser as a 2001 model and, according to the company, has sold more than 1.3 million of what it calls a \"segment-busting\" design with its own exterior styling and \"Swiss Army knife-like interior flexibility.\" For 2009, Chrysler drops the convertible body style, leaving only a 5-passenger wagon. The 65/35-split rear seat folds and is removable. With the rear seats out, the PT Cruiser wagon has 62.7 cubic feet of cargo room.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser is available in three trim levels: base LX, Touring and Limited. Standard on the LX are a tilt steering wheel; cloth upholstery; manually adjustable front seats; air conditioning; power windows and locks; remote keyless entry; 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo; auxiliary audio input jack; trip computer; compass and temperature display; theft-deterrent system; rear spoiler; P195/65R15 tires on steel wheels with wheel covers; and a split, folding, and removable rear seat. The Touring model adds cruise control; stain-resistant cloth upholstery; a 6-way power driver's seat with manual lumbar adjustment; fold-flat front passenger seat; power mirrors; electronic vehicle information center; security alarm; fog lights; chrome interior trim and bodyside moldings; and P205/55R16 tires on alloy wheels. The Limited model has a leather-wrapped steering wheel; leather upholstery; heated front seats; sunroof; Sirius satellite radio; universal garage door opener; and P205/50R17 performance tires on polished aluminum wheels. Available for 2009 is the Dream Cruiser Series 5. It can be ordered with either of the PT Cruiser's engines and has all of the Limited equipment. Exterior changes include Midnight White Pearl Coat paint with contrasting Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl painted roof and hoop spoiler; cross-hatched upper and lower solid billet aluminum grilles; 17-inch SRT Design wheels; chromed body-side trim moldings; and new \"PT\" door badges. On the inside the Dream Cruiser has a Pastel Slate Gray interior with contrasting Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl paint; Embossed Momentum seat fabric with silver accents; premium floor mats; and door sill plates. The Dream Cruiser is limited to a run of 1750 cars.

Several of the features on the Limited are available on other models. Other options include Chrysler's UConnect Phone hands-free cell phone link that comes with an auto-dimming rearview mirror; and a 368-watt stereo with 6-disc CD changer and 6 Boston Acoustics speakers.

Powertrain
The 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser LX and Touring models come with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 150 hp at 5100 rpm and 165 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. It comes standard with a 5-speed manual transmission; a 4-speed automatic transmission is optional. Standard on the Limited model is a turbocharged version of the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 180 hp at 5200 rpm and 210 lb.-ft. of torque from 2800 to 4000 rpm. EPA fuel-economy ratings are 21 mpg city/26 mpg highway for the base engine with the manual transmission; 19 mpg city/24 mpg highway for the base engine with the automatic transmission; and 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway for the turbo with automatic transmission.

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser include dual front air bags; seat-mounted front side-impact air bags; and a tire-pressure monitor. Anti-lock brakes and traction control are standard on Limited models and optional on others. The Chrysler PT Cruiser has earned a 4-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the driver and front passenger in front-impact crash tests. It has also received a 4-star rating for the driver and a 5-star rating for the rear passenger from NHTSA in side-impact tests, and a 4-star rating for rollover resistance. The PT Cruiser has not been crash tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
Chrysler's UConnect Phone uses Bluetooth technology to provide voice-controlled wireless communication between on-board cell phones and an integrated receiver. Bluetooth uses low-power radio communications to link devices over short distances. Multiple Bluetooth-enabled phones can be paired to the system.
