The 2015 BMW X5 is a midsize luxury SUV with seating for 5 people. A third-row seat is an option and requires an air suspension, so this is a costly upgrade. Primary competitors include the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Infiniti Q70, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Lexus RX, Lincoln MKX, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, and Porsche Cayenne.

Models and Features
There are five different versions of the BMW X5 for sale. The sDrive35i is equipped with a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive. This engine is also offered with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Remaining versions include xDrive as standard equipment, with the xDrive35d equipped with a turbo-diesel engine, the xDrive50i featuring a turbocharged V-8 engine, and the new X5 M including a lengthy list of performance enhancements as well as a more powerful, turbocharged V-8 engine.

The xDrive50i is equipped with more than just a larger engine and standard AWD. It comes with leather upholstery, 20-way multi-contour front seats, Comfort Access passive entry, reversing camera, more aerodynamic body features, metallic paint, and 19-in. aluminum wheels.

In addition to a more powerful engine combined with performance upgrades to the transmission, xDrive system, steering, brakes, exhaust, and suspension, the X5 M features premium-grade leather wrapped around M-style seats, an Alcantara headliner, unique instrumentation, and much of the equipment that is optional for other X5s.

Under the Hood
In the X5 sDrive35i and xDrive35i, a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine generates 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque across nearly the entire rev range. An 8-speed automatic transmission with sport and manual shift modes feeds the power to the rear wheels in the sDrive35i and to all four wheels in the xDrive35i. Automatic start/stop technology is standard for this engine.

The X5 xDrive35d model's turbo-diesel, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine doesn't offer the same depth of revs as the gasoline 6-cylinder models, and the horsepower rating is 255, but with 413 lb.-ft. of torque starting at a low 1,500 rpm, it upholds BMW brand values.

With 445 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque, the X5 xDrive50i accelerates to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds by BMW's stopwatch. The new X5 M is even faster, thanks to a tuned version of this same turbocharged V-8 that generates 567 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque.

All versions of the 2015 X5 include free scheduled maintenance for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles of ownership.

Fuel Economy
Based on EPA ratings the most fuel-efficient version of the X5 is the xDrive35d, which gets 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. As this overview is written, the EPA has not finalized the X5 M model's fuel-economy ratings, but they are likely to be the lowest within the X5's quintet of models.

The sDrive35i and xDrive35i get from a low of 18 mpg in the city to a high of 27 mpg on the highway, while the xDrive50i is rated to return 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

Safety and Technology
A navigation system with a 10.2-in. screen and iDrive 4.2 touchpad control is standard for every 2015 X5, along with a 3-year subscription to BMW Online and BMW Apps technology. BMW Assist eCall service is included for 10 years, helping X5 occupants contact rescuers following a collision or medical emergency.

To get a reversing camera for the sDrive35i or xDrive35i, buyers will need to purchase it as a separate option or choose the Driver Assistance package, which also contains a head-up display. The Driver Assistance Plus package further upgrades the X5 with adaptive cruise control with stop and go capability, a surround-view camera, and an active blind-spot detection system.

Buyers can upgrade the X5 to a premium or a high-fidelity audio system, and a rear-seat entertainment system is also available. Additional highlights from the option list include 4-zone automatic climate control, enhanced USB port with a smartphone-integration system, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive LED headlights, active steering, surround-view camera system, and a Night Vision with pedestrian-detection system.

As might be expected, the X5 M includes many of these features as standard equipment, and is offered with bespoke color, interior, wheel, and equipment options.
