The
Volvo S80 was first introduced in 1997 as a replacement for the Volvo 960, a 5-passenger, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) sedan. The first-generation S80 was designed on a front-wheel-drive (FWD) platform and later equipped with all-wheel-drive (AWD). The S80 was unique in that it offered a transversely mounted inline-6 powerplant—an uncommon engine arrangement, but a necessary contributor to the high safety ratings the S80 earned. Now in its second generation, the new-for-2007 S80 enters the 2008 model year offering a new turbocharged engine, upgraded interior appointments, and even more standard features.
