The entry-level Jeep Commander gets a new name—Commander Sport—and the Commander also adds a new, top-of-the-line Overland model for 2007. Other enhancements include an available power lift gate and five new exterior colors.

Overview
The Jeep Commander was an all-new model for 2006 and the first Jeep to offer 7-passenger seating in 3 rows. The Commander shares the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s platform and mechanical components, including its 4-wheel-drive (4WD) capabilities, but is longer, taller, and wider and has exterior styling more reminiscent of the old and more squared-off Cherokee model.

The Jeep Commander Sport comes with a 3.7-liter, 210-hp V-6 engine, 5-speed automatic transmission, Quadra-Trac I 4WD system, 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, ParkSense proximity warning system, cruise control, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system, as well as standard side curtain air bags, electronic stability control, all-speed traction control, and anti-lock brakes. Options include a 4.7-liter, 235-hp V-6, 5-speed transmission, Quadra-Trac II, power lift gate, power front seats, 6-disc CD changer, Boston Acoustics audio, fog lamps, satellite radio, rear air conditioning, leather seats, navigation system, power sunroof with CommandView skylights, and rear-seat entertainment system.

The Jeep Commander Limited comes with the 4.7-liter engine and other upgraded mechanical components as well as SmartBeam headlamps, heated front seats, power adjustable pedals, the CommandView roof system, remote starter, Boston Acoustics speakers, satellite radio, rear-seat air conditioning, and more. It also can be equipped with a 5.7-liter, 330-hp Hemi V-8 engine, Quadra-Drive II 4WD, a power lift gate, rear backup camera, GPS, and a special off-road package.

The new Jeep Commander Overland comes with the Hemi V-8 engine, Quadra-Drive II, a trailer towing package, two-tone leather and suede-trimmed seats, Berber floor mats, ParkView, a power lift gate, GPS, special trim inside and out, and an electronic vehicle information center.

The Competition
The Jeep Commander competes in the Midsize Utility segment, which consists of 16 models. Buyers in this segment look for performance, reliability, and comfort, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider Study^SM and the Escaped Shopper Study.^SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,^SM were the Honda Pilot (152,154 units sold), Jeep Grand Cherokee (139,148), and Ford Explorer (131,759). The Jeep Commander sold 88,497 units in 2006, an increase of 419.1 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Midsize Utility segment include the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Toyota 4 Runner, Nissan Pathfinder, Dodge Durango, and Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT.
