Why We Drove It: The 2010 Cadillac SRX has a predicted reliability rating of 4 Power Circles out of 5, making it better than most. The SRX was also called a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in calendar year 2009, before new roof-crush protection standards for calendar year 2010 were released.
Initial Quality – The 2010 Cadillac SRX is completely redesigned, and had not yet been included in the J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study (IQS), which measures owner satisfaction with vehicle quality after 90 days of ownership, at the time this review was originally published.

Performance and Design – The 2010 Cadillac SRX is completely redesigned, and had not yet been included in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout Study (APEAL), which measures owner satisfaction with performance and design attributes of a vehicle, at the time this review was originally published.

Predicted Reliability – The 2010 Cadillac SRX is too new to have been included in the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which measures owner satisfaction with a vehicle’s reliability after three years of ownership. Based on the historical performance of the Cadillac SRX in our Initial Quality Study and our Vehicle Dependability Study, the 2010 model receives a predicted reliability rating of 4 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings.

Fuel Economy – The 2010 Cadillac SRX is equipped with one of two engines: a direct-injected 3.0-liter V-6 driving the front or all four wheels or a turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 driving all four wheels. Each engine is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift feature. According to the EPA, the 3.0-liter is rated to return 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway (17 city/23 highway with AWD). The turbocharged 2.8-liter is estimated to deliver 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. The 3.0-liter V-6 is designed to operate on regular unleaded fuel, while the turbocharged V-6 requires premium.

Our review vehicle, a SRX with the 3.0-liter V-6 engine and AWD, averaged 19.6 mpg in mixed driving with a highway emphasis. Combined with the SRX’s standard 21-gallon fuel tank, this actual fuel economy figure results in an approximate 410-mile range between fill-ups of regular unleaded.

Safety – The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had not rated the crashworthiness of the redesigned 2010 Cadillac SRX at the time this review was originally published. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the new Cadillac SRX a “Good” rating in the frontal offset impact test, a “Good” rating in the side impact test, and a “Good” rating for rear impacts. The SRX did not qualify for a “Top Safety Pick” designation for calendar year 2010 because the IIHS now requires vehicles to meet new roof-crush protection standards.

Environment – According to the EPA, the 2010 Cadillac SRX consumes 16.3 barrels of petroleum annually with the 3.0-liter V-6 and front-wheel drive, and 18 barrels of petroleum annually with the 3.0-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive, resulting in carbon footprint ratings of 8.7 and 9.6 respectively. No EPA data was available for the turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 at the time this review was published. The EPA also had not yet published air pollution scores for any versions of the SRX.

Note: This review was published on November 19, 2009. It may not reflect data that has become available for this vehicle since that date.
