Why We Drove It: The Acura RL receives 5 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Initial Quality, APEAL, and Vehicle Dependability Studies, and ranked highest in its class in the Vehicle Dependability Study. The RL also receives 4.5 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings for Predicted Reliability, and scores 5 stars in each of the NHTSA’s crash-test criteria.
• The 2010 Acura RL has an Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure designed to deflect crash energy away from the passenger cabin in an accident.
• Acura says the RL engine’s Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control (VTEC) system is “a little like having an on-demand racing camshaft in your engine to give you high rpm power without compromising low rpm torque.”
• The 2010 Acura RL’s five-speed Sequential SportShift transmission is equipped with paddle shifters for manual gear changes, Grade Logic Control to avoid gear hunting when climbing hills, and a Sport mode for more aggressive shifting and complete manual control of the transmission.
• The 2010 Acura RL’s Super Handling AWD system actually assists steering in curves by directing engine power to an outside rear wheel, allowing it to spin six percent faster and rotate the RL around a corner by lightening the load on the front tires and reducing understeer.
• The 2010 Acura RL Super Handling AWD constantly monitors wheel speed, steering angle, lateral g-force, and yaw rate to determine how best to apportion power to the front and rear wheels, and from side to side on a given axle.
• When cruising, 70 percent of the 2010 Acura RL’s engine power is delivered to the front wheels.
• When accelerating hard or climbing a hill, up to 45 percent of the 2010 Acura RL’s engine power is delivered to the rear wheels.
• When cornering, up to 70 percent of the 2010 Acura RL’s engine power can be delivered to the outside rear wheel.
• Acura says the 2010 RL’s suspension is comprised mostly of forged aluminum to reduce unsprung weight, maximize tire-to-road contact, and isolate occupants from road harshness.
• The 2010 Acura RL’s steering is designed to offer higher levels of assist for low-speed maneuvers, and a firmer feel at higher speeds.
• The 2010 Acura RL’s hood, front fenders, and trunk lid are made of aluminum.
• Every 2010 Acura RL is equipped with a power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades.
• The 2010 Acura RL offers 13.1 cubic feet of trunk space. A pass-through allows the ability to carry longer items, such as skiis.
• When the 2010 Acura RL is equipped with the Technology Package, it includes a GPS-linked solar sensor that allows the climate control system to automatically compensate for the sun’s location.
• The 2010 Acura RL’s remote entry and ignition system can open the windows and power sunroof as the owner approaches the car to help vent hot air on sunny summer days.
• If the 2010 Acura RL keyless entry and ignition remote is accidentally placed in the trunk, the trunk will not lock. It will pop open and an audible alert will warn you that the remote is inside the trunk.
• The 2010 Acura RL comes standard with voice recognition technology allowing occupants to issue verbal commands to the audio, climate, and navigation systems.
• The 2010 Acura RL’s XM Note function allows occupants to record a 10-second section of music with artist and title information from the standard XM satellite radio so that it can be downloaded later from home.
• The 2010 Acura RL is equipped with Active Sound Control to reduce ambient noise from the cabin and better enjoy music from the 260-watt, Bose Centerpoint DVD-Audio system.
• The 2010 Acura RL’s Active Front Lighting System swivels the headlights as much as 20 degrees in the direction of a turn to help the driver see better around curves.
